These new AC-3T coaches are equipped with 81 berths instead of the usual 72 found in the current LHB 3T AC coaches. A number of enhancements are first time innovations - contactless water dispensers (foot operated), under-slung power setup (making space for the extra 9 berths), personalised AC vents for each berth and so on.

Yes, bio toilets are present on a few trains, but features introduced in the new 3AC Economy are not present in the current 1AC/H1 coaches.

PS : Inside news from IR: All coaches in future will be AC only.
That’s the misconception most of us are having. IR cannot/will not phase out the current sleeper class coaches. These 3AC Economy class is to be slotted in between 3AC and SL.

re: Indian Railways roll out AC 3-Tier Economy coaches

Looks flash.

I would like IR to taker another pass at this design. Call it Premium 3A (like premium economy on a plane) and reduce the birth count to 60 or so. The current and this new design suffers from lack of legroom. Its tight and uncomfortable for long journeys. Overnight or ~15 to 18 hour runs are fine. Yes; am aware we have 2A for that and it costs a lot more than 3A or 3A economy.

Any pictures of the upgraded toilets?

Going forward, the trains running with speed more than 130 kmph will not have any non AC coaches in them. And the existing non AC coaches in those trains will be converted into these new coaches & these will be having ticket price range in between the existing 3AC class fare & the sleeper class fare.

Makes sense, with wind blast in those speed can upset the train bogeys and can lead to accidents.

re: Indian Railways roll out AC 3-Tier Economy coaches

These are going to be called economy 3AC coaches. With the track upgrades being done, zero time table being planned and section speeds increased to 130 kmph in lot of zones, the need is to have trains running with rolling stock designed accordingly. Most express trains will be upgraded to 130 kmph top speed and these coaches will replace the existing sleeper coaches (mostly ICF ones).
Fare structure will be marginally higher than 3SL and the increased capacity will help overcome some of the difference.
Noticeably, while IR introduced an enhancement to the side berths (a rigid mattress to be kept over the laid down seats to provide a flat surface bridging the 'crack' - it seems to be missing in these pics.

With HOG enabled locos coming in, the power/generator will not be required and and an additional revenue generating coach can be added to the rake as well.

Looks swell. I will travel in train just to experience these coaches. I have fond memories of train travel from Hyderabad to Pune in a sleeper coach, not even a/c. Years later, this will be MUCH better for my pampered ass now.

re: Indian Railways roll out AC 3-Tier Economy coaches

The coaches appear fabulous. Kudos to the railway ministry by taking the Swach Bharat Abhiyan to another level. There is only so much a government can do. The onus to keep and maintain these facilities is our responsibility. Let railways do their job of cleaning it frequently but as citizens we also have an important role to play. We must ensure that we adhere to the cleanliness whenever we use public transport especially train coaches since we travel multitudes of distances in this medium. Earlier we use to complain about lack of basic amenities in railway stations, the government has come a long way in bringing about such changes gradually overtime to give the best facilities to the citizens. So lets ensure that we keep the environment clean and also teach others a lesson if we happen to see them littering (paan spits/plastic bottles/eatables left behind because one's destination has arrived/soiling the blankets and pillows provided, some instances people steal it as well).

Nice to see the upgrades and developments. We may not be up there with the rest of the world, but one step at a time we can get there. As for maintenance and cleanliness, let each one of us do our part. I don't care that others litter or damage public property, we should always refrain from doing such activities.

Wow, looks absolutely fantastic. It is going to look even better in 1AC/2AC with fewer people and berths. I just hope that our people treat it with some respect (remember, this is our tax money) and not try to ruin it from the get go. That aside, is that a fluorescent guidance strip in the corridore section like aircrafts?

re: Indian Railways roll out AC 3-Tier Economy coaches

I think the railways plan to eliminate 3 tier non AC compartments entirely. In the future all passenger trains will only be with AC coaches, with automatic doors and coach attendants. The idea is to maintain a semi high speed network with speeds between 130/160 kmph on normal routes and high speed (> 200 kmph) on tracks with proper signalling and fencing.
Let's hope they succeeded in this endeavor and we get rid of the third world slow trains we have right now.

Looks nice, but it is still a pain for elders to get to the upper and middle berth, climbing these have been a major hassle for my parents who travel in the train regularly, and many times I have been asked to vacate my lower berth, because an elder was assigned the upper berth.

Re: Indian Railways roll out AC 3-Tier Economy coaches

I couldn't help noticing the lovely new shining foot-rests for climbing to the upper berth. However, the old round design seems less hurtful than the rectangular design. Overall, the design of public places cannot be like private places when we take into account the required level of maintenance and hygiene.

Re: Indian Railways roll out AC 3-Tier Economy coaches

WOW! Such a big step up.

Hope is that
- They did usability and durability tests (The foot pegs look so much more stylish than the current ones)
- The grey is stain proof!
- The exteriors start seeing updates too
- These coaches can travel >130kmph at length
- Cant wait for DFC to open. Will hopefully see less congestion on critical routes!
