Tata Motors introduces new Intra V30 compact truck, phases out V20

The Intra V30 first showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo now replaces the V20 variant of the Intra compact truck family. This new BS6 truck now comes with a powerful engine and host of contemporary features.

The Intra truck was earlier available in two variants the V10 and V20 with the primary difference in their load-carrying capacities. However, Tata Motors seemed to have decided to phase-out the V20 variant which was a somewhat premium and bigger sibling of the V10, and replace it with V30.

It appears now the V30 will fill this gap with higher power and bigger vehicle for the customer who wants to buy the top variant for carrying larger cargo deliveries along with better feature combinations. This strategy has merit as it would avoid cannibalizing within the truck variants, and rather customers would get a clear choice between the Intra trucks.

The Intra V10 and V30 now cater to two different ends of the segment as both of them differ significantly in power and payload. The V10 gets 44.2 HP & 110 Nm engine while V30 gets 70 HP & 140 Nm engine, payloads were 1000kg and 1300kg respectively.

Even bigger news from the TATA SCV stable was the entry of Ace Gold Petrol BS6 which has a 700cc 2 cyl petrol motor with 30 bhp and 55 Nm torque. For an organization which said that only diesel engines are the way ahead for SCVs, this was a major change. (TATA website has been updated now: https://ace.tatamotors.com/tata-ace-gold-petrol.aspx)

Still is far behind the Super Carry Petrol BS6 variant which has a 1.2L 4 cyl engine and 72 bhp/98 Nm torque. And here is the bombshell, the Super Carry petrol costs less than the Ace Gold which has a tiny 2 cyl engine!

Another point to note is the introduction of advanced exhaust cleaning systems like DPF and SCR/LNT. The V30 gets LNT (which can be regenerated during rich operation cycle) whereas the Ace Gold and V10 get the SCR system (which needs DEF topped up). This makes understanding and maintaining these small SCVs a daunting prospect for drivers and owners in this segment.
