Whoa! Humongous thread. This is a real test of man, machine and the road.
In addition to the toll gates, I was wondering whether our roads are designed considering such loads? Also, someone please enlighten my poor soul on why exactly the construction is not carried out at the site? Does the economics of such transportation outweigh construction at the site?

Most tollbooths are designed in a manner that the leftmost lane is wider than the rest of the lanes, and doesn't have a roof. Normally these are kept blocked as "VIP" lanes. They also serve the purpose of letting these ultra-heavy behemoths through.
at toll gates i've noticed the left most lane is used for wide loads.
in my travels i've seen these mammoth vehicles pass (not witnessed though) through tolls, so i'm guessing the tolls are supposed to make provision for such huge loads to pass through; they can't disassemble the toll gate for sure :D

Thanks for your explanation. However, the toll booth that I mentioned does not have this feature. The left most lane is of the same vertical and horizontal clearance as other lanes. I hope members in Thane/Mumbai who have seen this toll booth able to shed some light on the same.

Found this Volvo Puller by the road side as he was struggling to take a U-Turn on the NH-9. He took the wrong exit on the ORR. He was not able to decide how to manage this monster. This truck had blocked the road for half an hour but later stopped by the side. So clicked these pictures then.
It was carrying a BHEL Generator.

Off late, a lot of trucks are seen plying railway bogies on the NH4 between Bombay and Bangalore. Seems like a factory on this stretch is building these bogies and transporting them for export:

Why not just haul it over the railway with a locomotive?
Unless they are built to a gauge, different from our broad gauge.
- Could this be a locomotive with dual pantographs?
- What does the logo say?

Two reasons I could think of:
- It could be meant for export and on it's way to JNPT.
- The factory could be far off from a railway station capable of loading this bogie onto the rail track with necessary cranes and equipment required to do so.
The protrusions that you see on the roof could be airconditioner units. The logo says "allcargo"

Was this towards Mumbai or towards Bangalore?
From the shape of it, I think its a Metro coach - the AC on top supports my feeling. Metro coaches are of Standard gauge and hence cannot be sent through the IR network. Plus Metro depots are not connected to the IR network.

These are the metro coaches built at BEML complex Bangalore. i think it is being ferried to Delhi. As these metro coaches are standard guage these cannot ride over broad guage of IR.

I happened to see it on the Mumbai Bangalore Bypass near Baner on Sunday!
The best part was it was being hauled by a MAN truck and not a Volvo :Shockked:
I could not stop to take pictures but it WAS a metro coach as I could see the wheels and the suspension setup. Binaiks sir's observation is completely true.

What could be the engine specifications for these Volvo Puller Trucks to haul such massive loads?
Is the trailer only used to make the cargo sit on it or does it get any power from the engine too?
