Tata bus: What is that long, tube-like thing on the dashboard?

What is this thing? Situated beside dashboard, long tube like thing with a transparent ring.

That would be the indicator for the condition of the air-filter ( how clean it is - if it needs cleaning). Many vehicles have this mounted right on the air filter itself. The arrangement seen in this pic helps check the state of the air filter directly, without having to check in the engine bay / below the body where the filter is mounted.

It is indeed the Air Filter condition indicator, but over here in Haryana, it is used as a cup/tumbler holder by the drivers besides double duty as a sort of a hook to hang a small bag or two.

Re: Tata bus: What is that long, tube-like thing on the dashboard?

The filter indicator has been in use for ages. I remember that my 1995 Tata Estate had one. These days cars dont have one.
One end of this is connected by a pipe to the manifold between air filter and turbo, at the other end there is a spring loaded red coloured metal cap. If filter is choked, the vacuume created by the Turbo pulls the cap inward, and is seen from the transparent part.
