Mahindra launches Arjun Novo 65 HP and 75 HP tractors

Mahindra has launched two variants of the Arjun Novo tractor in India. The Novo 65 HP and Novo 75 HP are offered in 2WD and 4WD variants with prices starting at Rs. 9.99 lakh for the 65 HP 2WD model and Rs. 12.5 lakh for the 75 HP 4WD variant (ex-showroom, Maharashtra).

The Mahindra Novo range of tractors come in an open station design with optional AC cabin. They have features like 4-way adjustable and air-suspended seat (AC cabin variant), tilt steering, suspended pedals, instrument cluster with diagnostic indicator, car-like combination switch and a twin position single button hood opening. The company is planning to introduce tractors with integrated cabins in India in the near future.

The export version has additional features like push button start stop, digital instrument cluster with auto diagnostic indicator, 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, DRLs, power shuttle option for clutch free forward and reverse, air-conditioning with heater and ventilation, immobilizer, rear view camera and tiretronics.

The tractors are designed specifically for the 65-75 HP segment and have a high lift capacity and hydraulic systems, which make them suitable for various farming operations. The Arjun Novo 655 DI is powered by a 3.5-litre, in-line 4-cylinder diesel engine that puts out 65 HP @ 2,100 rpm and is mated to a 15-speed transmission with 15 reverse ratios. The Novo 755 DI has the same engine but with 75 HP. It has a 15-speed transmission with 3 reverse ratios. Both models have a peak torque of 305 Nm and back up torque of 28%. The creep function limits the speed of the tractors to 0.4 km/h and both come with provision for front PTO drive. The hydraulic pump has a flow rate of 56 Ipm and the system is capable of lifting up to 2,600 kg.

The Mahindra Novo range is available in one colour option - Metallic Deep Red Paint with a decal.

Three reverse ratios, I think.
The main GB is a 4 + R constant mesh.

Not clear if there is a planetary reduction in the axle, to lessen the load on the tail/ crown.

I might be wrong I haven't studied it but most probably a 15 Forward, 15 reverse speed gearbox should be
5 speed Main Gearbox, and 3 speed Range box.
Reverse is achieved through a Power shuttle which reverses the direction of rotation of the input shaft to the main gearbox thus achieving 15 reverse speeds.

15F, 3 R gearbox should again be a 5 speed main gear box with 3 speeds in Range box. Reverse gear should have been incorporated in the Main speed gearbox thus achieving 3 speeds in reverse when we shift the rangebox gears.

Tractor specs do not mention reverse gear as part of no of gears so it can not be 4F +1R gear.

Thanks

Edit: Such high end tractors do have a planetary reduction for sure. There is hardly any space left to accommodate a high reduction bull gear pair. Also capacity for a single stage spur/helical gear reduction to transmit high torque is limited. So planetary reductions are preferred choice for new generation transmissions

^^^
My comment was based on the fact that these tractors are for India.
My understanding is that quick reversing is needed in items like loaders/ backhoes etc. 'Tractor' then acts as the base on which these accessories are mounted/ built. And this quick reversing is achieved either by a reversing shuttle, or by using a hydraulic drive.

Tractors in India mean soil preparation. In that context hydraulic drive is totally out. And a reversing shuttle just adds to the cost, without any real benefit in its chosen activity ie soil preparation. (75 HP will possibly pull a 3 prong subsoiler. More power than what is economical for just transport).

Admittedly all this is speculation on my side. Mahindra might be trying to open up a new market here. Maybe I'll give their dealer a call sometime.

Checked out the brochure on the net.
It does have a reversing shuttle.
Wondering about their target market.

Wow, sure looks like Mahindra is doing an 'XUV500' in the tractor segment. Premium, and I also like its looks.

A little known fact is that Mahindra sells more tractors in India than MUVs / SUVs. Its tractor sales are 25,000 - 30,000 units / month. This new range must be targeting the rich farmers, and also their export markets.

Many agricultural operaions in India too require a tractor to reverse. For example in Andhra they use the tractor in reverse and in a circle. The cut crops are laid down and the tractor tyre does the operation of so called threshing.

But as you rightly said predominantly the reversing option is used for loaders, backhoes etc. Most tractors are designed to suit various needs of the customers, so that the tractor can be used through out the year.

With infrastructure projects picking up, there is a strong demand for loader, dozer mounted on tractors.

A reversing shuttle is of two types viz a shnchro shuttle and a power shuttle.

In synchro shuttle a synchronizer (many a times double cone synchronizer or a synchronizer with a large dia)
is used to take up the inertial loads because of reversing the tractor. Here the tractor does require a clutch pedal. Often the operators use half clutch and land up in damaging the synchronizer.

Power shuttle consists of nothing but a hydraulic operated wet clutch (more often multidisk for space constraints) which acts in place of a synchronizer in the arrangement explained in above paragraph. As the clutch is operated hydraulically there is no need for a. clutch pedal. The Forward - Reverse lever does trigger the hydraulic valve which actuates the wet clutch.

In both the cases there is no requirement of a hydrostatic transmission. Hydrostatic transmission is required when you do not need steps in gearing. Although Hydrostatic transmission is the best for a field tractor but high cost, low efficiency and torque limitations have not made this technology very popular at least in India.

Thanks

Okay gentlemen, can you tell me how old the machine with this badge is?
Mahindra launches Arjun Novo 65 HP and 75 HP tractors-tractor.jpg

This tractor, Mahindra 575 DI is older than even I am and has that 'old' Leyland gearbox (that shows it's age - the gearbox has a Leyland logo) and I tell you guys, it didn't had a single mechanical failure in all these years except a few minor niggles - it has never been stranded anywhere. So much rugged, reliable and durable mechanicals it has come with. It was later joined by an Arjun 605 piece and I must say that these are very much dependable and reliable machines with probably the easiest serviceability - they are the Maruti and Hero of tractors in service and Toyota in reliability.

I was talking of use scenarios where one frequently/ consistently needs to toggle between forward/ reverse.

There are specialised solutions for that. And in the workhorse range, I would prefer the made for the task solution. However, would like a smaller, nimbler less expensive jack of many trades implement too. Versatality would be the key here.

I would think a hydraulic drive would be the option to avoid in a field tractor!

A suggestion: Why don't you write a couple of posts explaining what is important in a tractor (and why), the various implementations in pursuit of that goal, and the pros and cons of each implementation. Starting with say the TE20/ TO35/ MF35/ TAFE1035. Emphasis on transmission, hydraulics, and the three point drawbar. It would be very useful to the readers here.

The granddaddy was the International/ Mahindra B275 (starting end 60s I think, in India). A modified version of its engine still powers some of Mahindra's vehicles.

Must be around 30 years or older. My maternal uncle bought one with this logo around 30 years back replacing his massey fergusion. Eicher, HMT, Tafey, Massey were among the larger players in tractor market in the 80's.

Re: Mahindra launches Arjun Novo 65 HP and 75 HP tractors

Hi Everyone

Irrespective of the vehicle I am driving or considering, I tend to look up this forum and see if there is any talk about it. I guess it comes with a belief tht Team-BHP is a very diverse forum. Before buying a tractor I looked up the forum as usual. I found this thread. I had been considering a Mahindra tractor even though I started with visiting a John Deere dealership first. Then, I was delighted to see this thread discussing Mahindra's Arjun Novo series. By then I had finalized the model and had a quote from the dealer.

Last week, my family welcomed a Mahindra 655 DI 4WD Digisense tractor. The dealer quotation for it was INR 12.12 lakhs on the road. A 20K discount was offered on this. My parents and I were so thrilled the moment we walked into the dealer's garage to take a look at this lovely machine on the day of delivery. None of us had seen it. It wasn't available at any of the dealers including Nagpur because there has been no inquiry for it. We bought it for our farms. It is a 17 acre (across 4 plots) operation with a mix of rocky and soft sandy soil. Last year we spent over INR 1.3 lakhs on machinery rental to level one of the plots. I figured that if we continue renting, soon we would have spent money worth a new 35 HP tractor. In the process of research on lower power tractors my father and I decided that we might as well increase our budget and try something from the top of the line. That is how we arrived at the decision to buy this model.

From the first looks to driving it, this is an absolutely well done product. I must add that I am a first time user of a tractor. My ownership experience has just begun. By international standards this would count as a utility tractor. Whereas, in our district (Wardha) this is a first! No one buys above 55 HP here.

I am yet to access my user account on Mahindra's Digisense platform. KYC had to be done because it has a BSNL SIM inside. It is the Digisense feature which tipped the tractor choice in Mahindra's favour. I would really like my tractor to have a GPS unit so that I can geofence its movement. The KYC has been done. I am happy to offer more info and also upload Digisense brochure here.

The tractor feels competent and advanced in its controls, engine and features by a huge distance over other offerings. It drives like a car. One is ever so *aware* that it is a powerful machine. There are way too many things that I want to share here. But, I think I will wait till we get the frontloader and backhoe attachments. I have bought these from Bull Machines, Coimbatore. Together these cost another INR 10 lakhs. Delivery is awaited. Our estimate is that a tractor mounted frontloader and backhoe will be a more versatile machine than a JCB machine. Although, a regular JCB is driven by a 96 HP engine.

Here is a list of features that make the Arjun Novo 655 and 755 stand apart from other tractors of this category -

1. Digisense feature (see attached brochure)
2. Front PTO, in addition to the usual rear PTO
3. Higher fuel efficiency
4. Synchro shuttle for forward and reverse movements
5. Highest hydraulic lifting capacity

I would like to add that given the diversity of members here, there's hardly a car model left out of discussions or review. I have been a consumer of all that amazing information. This is the first time I felt I could contribute to the pool here.
