re: Air India Divestment - Tata Sons completes acquisition

Is Air Asia set to become a 100% Tata group owned ?

https://www.rediff.com/business/repo...a/20211126.htm

At the moment Tata has 83.6% in Air Asia, and with the purchase of the residual shares from Air Asia Berhad, they will own Air Asia completely.

This can mean that Air India and Air Asia are likely to be merged in due course.

Their plan is to merge Air India Express and Air Asia as these are the low cost airlines.

That's the plan.

Would be interesting to see how they do it, because Air India Express has an all B737-800 fleet , while Air Asia India has 100% A320 (classic / neo) fleet.

Tata plan to merge Air Asia India with Air India Express.

https://economictimes.indiatimes.com...7.cms?from=mdr

They will probably keep Air Asia India's operations domestic providing low fare connections to feed AI Express.

I think maybe TATA will discard the AI express fleet as fast as possible in favor of the Airbus fleet. AI Express fleet must be of a higher age which may suit discarding subject to the right purchaser being interested or they can also change the older aircraft to cargo configuration

Both AI Express fleet and AirAsia India fleet are of similar vintage, but 100% of the Airasia India fleet is leased, vs about 60-40 spread of owned-leased spread for AI Express.

https://www.planespotters.net/airline/Air-India-Express

https://www.planespotters.net/airline/AirAsia-India

However, for lean operations, the new management may choose to liquidate the owned 737s, release the lease on the rest of the 737, and invest in an all leased, all 320 fleet for the merged AI express-AirAsia India entity.
That would be the prudent thing to do IMO, especially as Air India has an all airbus narrow body fleet (319-320-321), and it would be easier from an engineering and maintenance perspective to swap technicians & engineers.

re: Air India Divestment - Tata Sons completes acquisition

Delayed Again!!

Air India handover to Tata group delayed, transition likely on Friday.

Quote:
Air India employees were sent an email late on Wednesday, informing them that the plan for the handover of the airline to the Tata group had been put on hold.

On Wednesday, emails had been sent to the staff, asking them to prepare for the transition on Thursday. This included meal up-gradation on some domestic and international flights as suggested by Taj SATS, a Tata Group-led airline catering company.
Quote:
The cabin crew were also instructed to turn up "smartly dressed" (to be assessed by 'grooming associates'), refer to passengers as "guests", and play out a special audio message by Ratan Tata, the new owner, on flights, among other changes that were planned ahead of the big handover.
Quote:
sources within the airline indicated that the handover could now take place on Friday. The top brass of Tata is expected to meet at 11 am on Thursday. An Air India board meeting is also expected on Thursday.

As first order of business, Tatas to introduce ‘enhanced meal service’ in 4 Air India flights

Quote:
However, while the "enhanced meal service" will be provided on four flights — AI864 (Mumbai-Delhi), AI687 (Mumbai-Delhi), AI945 (Mumbai-Abu Dhabi) and AI639 (Mumbai-Bengaluru) — on Thursday, the takeover will take place after Thursday
Quote:
The "enhanced meal service" will be served on Mumbai-Newark flight and five Mumbai-Delhi flights on Friday. The "enhanced meal service" — devised by the Tata Group officials — will be expanded to more flights in a staggered and phased manner.

re: Air India Divestment - Tata Sons completes acquisition

Interestingly Alliance Air with its 18 strong impressively young (by airline standards) ATR 72 fleet (average age 6 years) is not part of the deal. Most likely due to a lot of its routes being subsidized under UDAN- RCS.

Good news from a connectivity aspect as the fate of these routes are not immediately at least going to be decided by the collective wisdom of the chartered accountant and the management consultant!

Sarcasm intended - from bitter experience of explaining to the CAs and MCs in another celebrated merger more than a decade back why not enough people would be willing to travel from Trichy to Madurai via Chennai.

To the good folks at Air India (and I am sure there are lots out there) - may you retain your sanity in the next few months coming up !

Good Luck

One can see the change already. The marketing / branding team at Air India under the Tata Group has switched to subtler, understated and decluttered template to promote flights to various destinations.

The one with Lotus temple is the newer one.
