Chances are Tesla Semi has garnered more orders than the 3 digit ones known.

If you go by the reservation number then it could amount to over 1,230 Semi reservations and counting

Re: The Tesla electric Semi-Truck

This is a decent market size. I'm of the opinion that there will be a much bigger market for vehicles like Municipal garbage trucks, sub 10 ton delevery trucks which are more common for local delivery, and delivery from big market hubs to cities within a few 100 kms. City buses and corporate owned staff buses that run in the range of 100 to 400 km a day.
All these will have an advantage of smaller lighter battery packs, and a return to base depot daily.

Re: The Tesla electric Semi-Truck

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the company’s electric trucks, the Tesla Semi, are setting out on their first cargo trip transporting battery packs from Gigafactory 1 in Nevada to Tesla’s Fremont factory in California.
A Tesla Semi prototype was recently spied driving on the highway going up to Gigafactory 1 and we suspected it would be to test the route for transport since company executives already confirmed their intentions to use the electric truck on that particular route.

Today, both of Tesla’s previously seen electric semi truck prototypes were hooked to trailers with battery packs at the Gigafactory 1, where Tesla produces stationary energy storage battery packs, like Powerpacks and Powerwalls, and Model 3 battery packs.

Elon Musk shared a picture of the trucks leaving the Gigafactory today:
The Tesla electric Semi-Truck-20180307-16_17_36elon-musk-instagram_-first-production-cargo-trip-tesla-semi-heavy-dut.png

During a presentation about the new Tesla Semi at the annual conference of Transport and Logistics in the Netherlands last year, Tesla VP of Truck programs Jerome Guillen confirmed that the company will be using their electric semi trucks for freight transport between its facilities in California and Gigafactory 1 in Nevada:

“Tesla will be the first customer for the truck. We will use our own truck to carry cargo in the US between our different facilities. We have an assembly facility in California, the Gigafactory in Nevada, so we will use our trucks to carry things in-between.”

Previously, Tesla CEO Elon Musk referred to the automaker’s logistic costs to carry cargo between the two locations as “gigantic”. He even suggested that they are considering building a hyperloop system for cargo with his Boring Company startup in order to address the issue.

But in the short-term, it now looks like Tesla Semi will do the job.

It’s a 250-mile trip and it would be the first solid demonstration of the range capacity of the Tesla Semi, which Tesla claims can travel up to 500 miles with a full load.

Though Tesla should benefit overall going downhill during a trip from Gigafactory 1 to Fremont. If they have cargo to bring back from Fremont factory to Gigafactory, that will be the real challenge.

Electrek’s Take

Any truck maker should start to get very worried right about now. As we recently reported, some of them still don’t believe that what Tesla is doing is even possible.

Daimler’s head of trucks said that ‘Tesla Semi defies laws of physics and is passing them by if the specs are true’.

If Tesla can now really prove the specs of the electric truck and deliver it at the promised price points of $150,000 and $180,000 depending on the configuration, it’s virtually game-over for other truck makers since the economics grossly advantage Tesla Semi.

The next few months of testing ahead of the planned start of production in 2019 are going to be exciting.

Re: The Tesla electric Semi-Truck

Telsa may be abandoning Semi project: Analyst

Quote:
It’s been a rough few weeks for Tesla, with production problems, lawsuits, and analysts speculating that the company is running out of money and will need a capital raise before the year is out to keep going. Now, Seeking Alpha writer John Engle is suggesting that the much-anticipated Tesla Semi project may be dead.

The Tesla Semi was unveiled in November 2017 to great fanfare and intrigue. Did Tesla have the magic ingredient to make an all-electric truck viable that has so far eluded so many others? A series of public announcements from the likes of Pepsi, Anheuser-Busch, and UPS followed, suggesting that this truck was maybe – just maybe – going to revolutionize the industry.

After the initial glitz wore off, industry experts starting dissecting the few available numbers on the truck – and it wasn’t always good. Still, many believe an all-electric Class 8 truck could work in certain applications and there remained optimism that Tesla could deliver.

Then the Model 3 came along. Tesla’s Model 3 production problems are well-documented, and the long-awaited car has run into one roadblock after another as Tesla and Elon Musk try to straighten out their issues.

In the company’s most recent earnings call, Engle points out that Musk never mentioned the Tesla Semi – the darling of the company just mere months ago – until he was asked specifically about it by Phil LeBeau of CNBC, who wanted to know about reservation numbers and how far along in the process the development was.

Musk’s answer was eye-opening.

“I actually don't know how many reservations we have for the Semi. About 2,000? Okay. I mean, we haven't really tried to sell the Semi. It's not like there's like an ongoing sales effort, so sales – orders for Semi are like opportunistic, really companies approaching us. Yeah, it's not something we really think about much,” Musk answered.

To Engle, the acknowledgement that Tesla isn’t actively selling the Semi is telling.

“If the Semi looked like it could claim a significant market, then Tesla would be moving forward with it,” he wrote. “That would not necessarily require massive capital outlays toward building a production facility – not at first, anyway. But one would expect the company to at least tout the market opportunity and continue to promise that development would be coming soon. Instead, investors have been left with a rather peculiar silence.”

So, what is the status of the Semi?

Last week, the Semi triggered a lawsuit from Nikola Motor, which claims Tesla violated three of its patents in designing the Semi. That suit is seeking $2 billion in damages. In addition, Anheuser-Busch announced that it will purchase up to 800 Nikola Two tractor models over the next seven years as it works to convert its entire dedicated fleet to alternative power.

With all the bad publicity swirling around Tesla, many are now wondering if Tesla itself will survive.

To do so, Tesla may have to shut down the Semi project and funnel that money into other needs rather than try and compete in an arena that is well-stocked with legacy companies with a technology that may still be several years away from being viable in the Class 8 market.

Engle surmises that with only about 2,000 orders for the Semi – a total he calls “anemic” – and Musk announcing that Tesla would be cutting its capital expense budget from $3.4 billion to less than $3 billion gives Engle reason to believe the Tesla Semi is not a priority.

“Apparently, the company has "significantly cut back on its capex projections by focusing on the critical near-term needs". In other words, it is cutting costs and pushing back growth projects to conserve cash during the still agonizingly slow Model 3 ramp. With Tesla’s net working capital deficit having reached a record level, the urge to pull back from expensive adventures makes sense from a financial perspective,” he wrote, noting that it “now seems evident that Tesla has abandoned the Semi project – or at least put it way back on the backburner.”

Re: The Tesla electric Semi-Truck

The Tesla semi truck will also be able to get from 0-100 in just over 20 seconds when fully loaded to its 36,000 kg or almost 36 tonnes towing capacity!

In comparison, a regular diesel semi truck in the United States does the same sprint in over 60 seconds!

Re: The Tesla electric Semi-Truck

A Tesla Semi prototype has made an interesting appearance at the headquarters of a potentially critical Tesla Semi customer; trucking giant J.B. Hunt.

The company was amongst the first to place a Tesla Semi reservation when the automaker unveiled the first prototypes last year.
Quote:
J.B. Hunt is one of the largest freight and trucking companies in the US.

It operates “more than 12,000 trucks and over 100,000 trailers and containers
They want to see the proof of the vehicle’s capacity and economic advantages.

Tesla's Semi accumulates more testing hours as part of a road show like event targeting to show off the prototype to reservation holders.

The electric truck is now in Iowa, where it stopped at another reservation holder: Ruan Transportation.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that Tesla Semi made it ‘across the country alone’ with only Supercharger network and an extension cord.

He added that “most major customers have tried it and love it.”

Tesla has previously said that it aims to bring the electric truck to production next year, but it has yet to announce where it will be manufactured.
