Mahindra P601 light truck (new Maxximo) spied EDIT: Named Jeeto

Mahindra is developing a new light truck in the sub-2 ton segment. The company has been testing the vehicle near Chennai.

Tamil motoring magazine, Motor Vikatan has obtained pictures of the vehicle, which it says has been codenamed P601. It is believed that the vehicle could be the new Maxximo which is Mahindra's rival for the segment-leading Tata Ace.

The pictures show that the P601 has new headlamp clusters with separate turn-indicators, quarter glasses for the windows and a rear-mounted exhaust. The truck carries its spare wheel on the right side, below the loading bay, while the battery is located on the left.

The P601 has a large cabin with basic controls, a dashboard-mounted gear lever and separate seats.

The current Maxximo is powered by a 909 cc, 2-cylinder, diesel engine producing 26 Hp and 55 Nm of torque, coupled to a 4-speed manual gearbox. The P601 could use the same engine with a few changes.

The P601 will be manufactured at Mahindra's upcoming plant in Cheyyar, Tamil Nadu.

Yeah. It surely is a relief. Tata ace will feel more competition now.

Saw the Mahindra P601 LCV yesterday evening in GST road chennai (proceeding from Guindy towards Tambaram..)

2 test vehicles were being driven, sounded almost like Tata Ace (a bit louder though), Spare wheel & fuel intake placed nicely on the right side of the vehicle, battery towards the left side. The entire silencer muffler was vibrating a lot.

On seeing this snap, I blamed my eyes. But last evening I saw this vehicle in person and confirmed it wheel disc is protruding outside the tire side walls I suppose there is some safety requirement on passenger cars regarding this (wheel disc should be within the envelop of tire sidewall. i.e., the outermost surface of Tire + Wheel assembly should be the tire side wall), isn't it applicable for LCVs?
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

The vehicle has been officially launched.

Another ugly looking LCV from Mahindra.Really fail to understand why the designers at Mahindra go out of their way to make these vehicles look so bad.
