+1,
Tata developed the Ultra series aka Y1 series with global benchmarks from Nissan, Isuzu, Hyundai..etc. It was developed with clean slate and the platforms spans over range of buses and trucks from 6T onwards. The job done is commendable and the only thing with is common right now with existing products is engine.

That begs the question, why did Leyland not bring in other components from the AVIA truck rather than bringing in primarily the cab??

It is obvious the with the Ultra and Fuso range of trucks the level of the game in the LCV/ICV market is reaching a new level.

Could you plz be little more specific, on what you are trying to convey/ask?

The difference between the manual, automatic and automatic manual is quite huge. Iirc the AMT functions as a gear changer so the transmission is infant a manual box underneath and the auto component is fitted on top. It cannt be fitted into cars since the gear changer works on pneumatics and requires a big air tank which cannot be stuffed into a car. iIRC auto trannies tend to be a completely different mechanism inside the transmission itself. Pls correct me if I am wrong here!

You are right about the difference, but system need not be pneumatic only. It can be either electronic, electro pneumatic, electro hydraulic etc. In case of Boss, its electro pneumatic and in case of car it can be electro hydraulic or purely electronic.

Cover story about the Boss in Auto Car Professional:

- Boss is made in Ashok Leyland's newer Pant Nagar facility, and perhaps the best that India’s commercial vehicle sector has to offer.
- The average age of employee's in this facility is 22 and out of which 154 are girls.

About the Product:
- The Boss range will have five GVW nodes which include 8T, 9.6T, 11.9T, 12.9T- and 14.5T ton offerings.
- In order to bolster its rugged credentials, ALL conducted endurance testing over 24 lakh kilometers and road testing over 900,000km. All this was done with 70 percent overloading, given that overloading is de rigueur for Indian truckers.
- Cab repair facility that Ashok Leyland says is a first for the CV sector is established at select dealers and which will be able to replace entire panels.
-The company will also provide an accident repair guarantee of 15 days or pay the owner for a month’s EMI.
-Ashok Leyland will use the truck-on-truck delivery method rather than drive to the buyer to ensure that he gets a vehicle in perfect condition and can start from zero mileage.
- The LE variant is entry-level and, offers 5-7 percent more mileage than competitors.
- LE which develops 120hp, with wider brake linings, higher service intervals for oil change and a longer clutch life of 300,000km.
- The LX is the premium offering and offers 5-7 percent more mileage than an LE, has automated manual transmission – an industry first – and engine life of 500,000km.
- Under the hood is a 130hp common-rail engine, plus an AC cabin.

Some questions on the Boss:
1. Is the AC standard on LX and optional on LE?
2. I find the tyres too skinny - is it the angle of the photos or really skinny? Are they radials?
3. LE provides 5-7% improvement in FE over competitors and LX provides 5-7% over LE - what was the benchmark used, and are there any absolute numbers?

Not related to Boss, does AL offer Leymatic in U-trucks?

1. Its standard in LX and is not available in LE
2.Tyres are regular 8.25X20 bias ply, and is the appropriate size.
3.No absolute figures are available. Only user review can tell.

Leymatic is not available in U Trucks. Currently available in 12M, 12M RE, RESLF, Janbus and in Boss.

Didn't Starbus come with AMT? What is the difference between the Boss' system from those?

I think you are referring to the Eaton Auto box. AL's Leymatic is not an Automatic transmission, but an AMT which is different because of the components.

Guys who are familiar with AL:
Is there a new series of Vikings with this box ? Just travelled in a long-distance bus with this kind of a gear box. Same 3 modes - Crawler, Economy/Power, Auto/Manual.

That should be 12M. Which route and which operator was it?

VRL - on Belgaum-Bangalore.

How does this work / What exactly is it ? One doubt - doesnt look like the clutch has to be used when in A mode ?

VRL has close to 120 buses with Leymatic. Irrespective of Auto/Manual mode you need not use clutch pedal. Infact there will be only A and B.

I saw Boss when it came to pick up materials from the organization I currently work for.

1) The wiper washer fluid is very very conveniently located, behind the front bumper and has a cut in bumper to open the bottle cap.

2) Headlamps are 70/75W. Are these legal ?

3) Butter fly sort of front quarter glass, like the one which was earlier available in Padminis/Ambassador.

4) RVM over left door. What is this for ?

Probably the owner installed aftermarket bulbs? The legal limit is 55/65W, AFAIK.

I think it's mandated by CMVR, that HCVs should have a mirror to see close to the door.
