Re: Motor Homes in India

Nice share!

You're definitely right, it's leap years behind the RV category that exists in the US, but it's a start.

What I believe will a major hurdle is the lifestyle choices. In US, after certain age of retirement, people actually take off on a cross country tour in RVs, which is currently just not the culture here.

But who knows what the Indian population will adapt to.

Thanks for sharing!

Re: Motor Homes in India

Hidden away at the bottom of Basecamp India's page http://www.basecamp.in/brands.php are links for motor homes and caravans.

It does not appear as if the links work, though.

May be useful to contact Basecamp http://www.basecamp.in/contact-us.php

A quick search at Google for motor home India also reveals suppliers https://www.google.co.in/#q=motor+home+india

I have also heard that tourism departments of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are both encouraging this lifestyle / culture.

While I can think of several Indian commercial vehicles that could be used as a base to build motor homes on, I am wondering which Indian passenger vehicles will be suitable to accept a towing hitch, for towing campers.

Cheers,

Re: Motor Homes in India

Wow, nice idea whoever thought of it. What makes motorhome travel possible and enjoyable in North America and Europe however is the abundance of public campgrounds, national parks and RV parks with nearby attractions. Unless this sort of infrastructure is built up I don't really see a lot of people taking to this form of vacation in India.

re: PICS: Caravan/Motorhomes in India

Mods: Thank You for merging this with an existing thread.

I must say this is a good initiative.
When I say this, I am thinking of 3 families OR one family with elderly people and children. The commercials will also be affordable if there are maximum people on board (6 adults plus children).

Having said that, I am wondering and will look forward for reviews of people to gauge how comfortable the ride is, given our "wonderful" smooth as a baby's butt roads :P
I dont want to be thrown out of the couch and woken up from a slumber because of that speed breaker with no markings or the nincompoop who decides to take a short cut.

Understandably, they have a driver (TWO in fact) for the trip. I am assuming that a commercial license is required to drive this.
Wouldnt it be fun if it could have been rented out and self driven ?

Re: PICS: Caravan/Motorhomes in India

Campervan Tourism has been launched in Kerala by "Camp Inn Caravan".

As per Newspaper reports, they seem to have a tie up with Kerala Tourism Development Corporation

Re: PICS: Caravan/Motorhomes in India

I feel Maruti Omni and Eeco have a good potential to be Mini Caravans, which are fuel efficient and spares would be easily available.

Since they are compact in size and cheap to buy overall costs would be low.
Zoomcar or any other car rental services can think of customizing such vehicles to start with and provide them on rentals.

Re: PICS: Caravan/Motorhomes in India

The pictures look great; but I'd be interested o know how, or if, the technical challenges have been met.
Water tank capacity
Waste tank capacity; and means of emptying [??!!]
Energy [auxiliary generator? AC?]
On the ones with interior pics, I see no kitchen at all, no fridge, no freezer.
What about the domestic water pump? Is the start battery separate from the house batteries? There's a lot to consider.
They look really great for people on a film set where you can plug into the company generator and order food from the company kitchen. But if you really want to travel in the countryside, you need to be able to store and prepare food.

Many have asked about RTO registration.
I did it in Goa a couple of decades ago; my swaraj mazda was registered as a private "passenger van". The 6 ton weight isn't listed in the rule book as relevant; only the number of seats matters.
Of course bureaucrats have their own ideas, and their own values.
If you know what I mean.

You can't have cargo outside the vehicle body, but you can have a luggage rack.
What's the difference??
Luggage is the property of the passengers. So my motorbike was luggage.
Anyway, no one ever asked.

There is an AIS-124 Guideline for Campervans in India (attached in the end), and they do have a few floorplans which can be attached with the vehicle papers while registering your Campervan in India.

PICS: Caravan/Motorhomes in India-ais124-campervan-layout-1.jpg
Layout Number 1 (Probably for a small sized van)

PICS: Caravan/Motorhomes in India-ais124-campervan-layout-2.jpg
Layout Number 2 (Probably for a big Bus)

PICS: Caravan/Motorhomes in India-ais124-campervan-layout-3.jpg
Layout Number 3 (Probably for a longer van)

Hope this helps!
