JCB GT has been crowned as 'The Fastest Digger on Earth' after it achieved a record speed of 72.58 mph (116.82 km/h) at Bathurst, near Sydney in Australia. Matthew Lucas, JCB Demonstration Driver, was the man who was behind the wheel during the world record run. The record was confirmed by Guinness World Record officials.

The JCB GT originally made its debut in 1988 and was made of fibreglass and aluminium, powered by a Chevrolet V8 engine. It was originally designed to perform high-speed wheelies at drag strips in the USA. The latest JCB GT is has a loader and digger made completely out of aluminium and sits upon a light weight steel chassis and JCB Fastrac tractor rear axle.

This is not the only record that the JCB backhoe holds. For 14 consecutive years, it has been the world's largest selling backhoe loader. JCB has made over half a million backhoes since the time of its invention in 1953.

Come what may, speed thrills and the new record is a testimony of the same. Can't even imagine if such possibilities of speed run are practiced at Indian roads by JCB GT and one sees all the SUVs running for safe harbors and call it a day.

Now that you mentioned it, I am actually imagining the sight of this 1000+hp beast sprinting on the streets of Mumbai and all the cabbies and autos (who usually don't make way) running away for their dear lives .

I suspect if someone may take-off those digger jaws and make it an everyday drive.

I saw a program on Discovery nearly 4-5 Years ago featuring the earlier model, at that time too this was the fastest JCB, though Discovery guys didn't reveal its top speed.

@Olympic swimming pool! I guess the thread title really will make everyone think the same. That it digs fast! Perhaps the pun is intended!

As for the jaws - no let them be there. See how they've covered them up for aerodynamics. I'm sure with a proper curve, it will create the same downforce as a Ferrari F1 car (Pick any since 2009. All really lack downforce and are just a bit faster than the JCB) and give great aerodynamic grip in cornering.

With the land speed records and JCB GT stuff, wonder when is JCB going to be inspired like Ferruccio Lamborghini to start their own fleet of supercars to challenge the Raging bull and Prancing horse!

My cousin's 3 year old already dreams of becoming a Collector and buying a JCB for his daily commute.
Forget about 100 km/hr, even half of that is scary. Once I had to overtake a JCB that was going around 50 km/hr. The small front wheels were bouncing off the road all the time, and the driver had an 'overtake me if you can' grin on his face.

The best part about this news was that they called the driver of the backhoe simply as "The Dig".
Some say, only a few people would have got what they meant by it

Can it actually perform the functions of a digger or does it just look like one. If its the latter then its nothing much to write home about, if it really does have functional equipment ..then wow!
