Hi guys,

I am in the process of upgrading the speakers in my Swift. Will be using the Illusion Carbon 6.1 components in the front doors & looking for 6X9s at the rear. These speakers will be driven through the JBL 75.4 amplifier. In addition, I will be using a 12" Ground Zero subwoofer too.

Now, I happened to come across this link Talk Audio - Speakers - Coaxial and found reviews of the top 15 6X9 speakers available. They were also given points out of 10 and the lowest score was 7.8!!! Points have been given keeping in mind - Sound Quality, Build Quality, Power Handling, Efficency & Value for Money.

Looking at my proposed setup, which speakers do you think would best match the same & why? B&T has already suggested his view but just wanted other opinions too.

The choices and score are as mentioned below:

I was surprised to not see Illusion in the above list.

Do let me know what you guys think of the above. Do check the link for the reviews too.

you really dont need 6x9's if you have a sub. stick some 6.5" ers in the door and leave the front soundstage intact.

PS: i wouldnt read too much into those values :)

You list is exhaustive. Few will have heard them all. Without a good listen to all of them it would be unfair to recommend one over the other.

That said the GZ, Alpine, Hertz, JBL all offer good VFM in India.

First of all, why do you need a 6x9 when you have a Sub in place?. If what you are planning is rear fill, better go for 6.5" / 5.5" Coaxials.

Even if you vouch for one, dont go by ratings of some mag / websites. Audio / Sound quality generally come with high degree of subjectivity. Hence what they rate may not be entirely acceptable to all.

I'd rather suggest you to jot down your budget, list down 3-4 alternatives, audition them and select the ones that appeals to you

Chuck the rears bro. Never will need them. Unless chauffeur driven. Then chuck the fronts or have them shifted to the rear doors.

hey Mi10...sry to sound stupid...but just wanted to know...aren't 6x9 coaxials? sry again for that dumb question

I tell you Frank, some of the guys (including me) feel ICE is incomplete without having "something for the rears".

Even in my case(Self driven, 98% of time only front passengers) i am still unable to mentally satisfy myself that the rear's are an absolute waste. I know what you say is logical, but...:D

nothing is illogical guys. If you like the rears, buy them. But only don't allow the rears to overpower the fronts. That's all.

Having got all your suggstions, let me tell you that my current set up has components in front (JBL GTO 606C3e) & 6X9s (JBL GTO 937) at the rear driven through the JBL 75.4 & a 12" Infinity Sub driven by the JBL 301.1 monoblock. The sound is not that bad but looking for more sound quality & clarity.

But, my intial set up had the JBL components in front & JBL GTO 636e coaxials at the rear & for some reason I just didnt seem to be happy with the rears. The whole setup just felt incomplete until I got rid of the rears & installed the 6X9s. Probably it could be a case of habit always having 6X9s in my previous rides & therefore a psychological effect.

Get 6*9 speakers that are 2 way especially since you are going to fit them in the back. Splurge on expensive components for the front only. Buy the costliest 2 way unit from the group.
In order of preference.
1) Morel Pulse 6*9
2) Diamond D3 D393i
3) Pioneer TS-E6902i

Its logic that for the same price a 2 way speaker will be better built than a 3 way speaker.
Best of luck and before you buy a subwoofer please go to a musical instrument shop and ask to hear the sound of a kick drum and aim to get somewhat similar sound in your car. Kick drums on the Metallica album should help you tune the set for low frequency. Please for GOD's sake stay away from artificial bass.

I'd +1 to that. If you do not have/ plan to have a Sub, a 6x9 on the rear parcel shelf will give you better low-end bass than a 6.5/ 5.5 on the door. Now that you have a Sub, go for 6.5" coaxial speakers in the rear door, have the HPF/ LPF tuned appropriately.

I could safely bet that something was not right in the tuning front- I got my setup done and tuned by Satya (Blueraven) in Bangalore, and the sound is clean and tuned to just the way I like it- if you are visiting Bangalore, pay him a visit- he is located in the Cambridge Layout's 1st main road...

After all your reviews and feedback, I have decided to scrap the idea of having 6X9s at the rear and going in for the DLS 8" Coaxials which will be installed on the parcel shelf.

dude, an 8" coax is even more overkill than a 6x9!
