Dubai Duty Free

Hello Bhpians,

Is Dubai Duty Free a good place to get speakers, speaker wires, Dynamat Xtreme?

Has someone bought any of these recently?

Any pointers to specific shops would be most helpful.

thanks

AFAIK, speakers, speaker wires, Dynamat Xtreme etc are not available at Dubai Duty Free. At least till Sep 2007 they weren't! Unless I missed it out totally.

Correct. Dubai Duty free has none of those things. I was there a few weeks ago.

Gain Setting

I recently saw a elaborate explaination on how to set gains on amplifiers. As that thread was in Sound Off Show Off section, I am not posting my query there.

I would like to know should we follow the same process to set gains when input sensitivity of the amplifier fall outside the pre out voltage. To be specific, if the pre out voltage is 8 volts and the input sensitivity of the amplifier ends at 4 volts, what should be the approach for setting gains. Same?

Here are the internal dimensions of the front and rear compartments of the box (Width x depth x height, in mm and inches; Width left to right as seen from front, depth front to rear):

If sub mounted in front compartment:
Compartment cft liters W mm D mm H mm W in. D in. H in.
Front........... 0.616 17.4 165.1 325.0 325.0 6.30 13.0 13.0
Rear............ 0.904 25.6 242.4 325.0 325.0 9.24 13.0 13.0

If sub mounted in rear compartment:
Compartment cft liters W mm D mm H mm W in. D in. H in.
Front........... 0.566 16.0 151.5 325.0 325.0 5.79 13.0 13.0
Rear............ 0.954 27.0 255.8 325.0 325.0 9.75 13.0 13.0

With this, the carpenter should be able to figure out the cutting dimensions. Use rounding appropriately, i.e. 5.79" can be 6", and 9.24" can be 9-1/2" etc. Most carpenters are OK with fractions but find decimals difficult.

Next: Port dimensions

Request some thoughts on this.

No difference, except that HU volume setting has to be kept lower to ensure you don't reach a situation where HU preamp output exceeds 4V. If that happens, amp will clip.

5 channel amps

I have 2 questions:
  1. Why aren't 5 channel amps popular ?
  2. Any 5 channel amps available in India with B+W? If yes, which ones?

I'm no audio guru but have spent a lot of time and effort in recent weeks in my ICE upgrade so thought I'd share my perspective. Here's how I would split it up:
HU: 5k
Front (Components): 4k
Rears (ovals): 3k
Damping: 3k (front doors. on my swift LDI, the damping made a lot of difference to the components' output. cost around 2.5k and provided more improvement to the sound than an incrementally better set of components)
2 channel amp: 3k
Wiring + install: 2k

This comes to 20k and works well if you plan no upgrades later. Ideally, spend an additional 4k-6k and get a better HU, compos and a 4 channel amp now itself. Brands pretty much are a function of budget and taste and I'd suggest listening to a few installs.

Alternately, do it in phases. If you plan to do it in phases, make sure you plan your final system before buying anything. Upgrading individual parts of the install becomes expensive (I ended up with an unplanned HU upgrade, lost 2k in resale of the old one).

Thanks Jaibir,

Being a newbie, here are few questions which I have in mind,

1) Whats damping & is it necessary?

2) Second, won't I need a sub woofer with the amp?

3) Is 2 speakers better or 4? Plus how should I position them for optimum effect?
