HCL MiLeap as a CarPC Discussion

Hello Friends,

As you know, HCL MiLeap Portable netbook has become center of attraction of tech community. It happened specially when it reached to price point of Rs. 12990. We can not get a 7" touchscreen for carPC for 13k in India and We are getting whole laptop with 7" touchscreen.

It does not have that much horsepower but still it is sufficient to serve carPC purpose.

Only thing comes in our mind how to mount it in car? whether it will fit in 2 din slot? Or we need bracket support? Everybody has these kind of questions and at least one of us knows to tackle this problem.

I have created this topic to discuss all things for HCL MiLeap as a CarPC.

from where did you get it at 12990 ? I got it for 14990 at Chroma with a bundled Tata Indicom Net Surf + pendrive.
Seems HCL is clearing stocks to introduce a newer pocket PC model.

Am also contemplating using this as an add-on with a Holux GPS receiver for navigation using available maps.

Ask some HCL employee, they might get more Cheaper.
By the way I would suggest you not to Fit Permanently Into your car. Instead you can use the power out let to charge it up and use as an external Accessories. In need you can just place it to your other car

Outlets like croma, big bazaar, excite have items priced much higher compared to what you can get outside.

Here are the some good reviews of Mileap

I feel by not fitting it into car it becomes ordinary laptop which I think is suitable for carrying with you. But If I fit it into car then it becomes integral part of your car, it has feel like CarPC, it turns into totally different gadget.

Do you have the actual dimensions of the pc folded as tablet?
where are you getting it for 12990?
Although mounting it with a dashboard mount stuck on its back will change to a different kind of gadget altogether, dont look for a permanent type of mount. the body will be disfigured beyond use if left in a hot summer afternoon. the body plastic cannot take 70-80c temperatures ( the max recorded temperature in my car in mumbai summer).

I do not know actual dimensions. But I can feel that we can't fit it into double din slot available. For that purpose we need to separate LCD panel from laptop and Put it into slot. This will be tough task as there are chances that laptop will get damaged. But if it is successful then that would ultimate DIY satisfaction.

Rs. 12990 is wholesale price. I am registered as a retailer computer shop owner to one of the best wholesaler in Pune. Datacare Corporation. I can get all computer stuff at very cheap rates.

I have not purchased MiLeap. But this discussion is initiated as a feasibility study.

This are the dimensions given on the site. I think when folded as tablet should be same dimensions or the depth may increase by max 5 mm.

Dimensions: (WxDxH) – 360 mm x 263 mm x 34.9 mm

but it will definetly more bigger than the dins. The HU width will be 170mm so the din should be 171-172mm (MiLeap is 360mm). This thing will require complete dismantling and fabrication of a new screen mount to sit in the din.

@sushantr5, Can you get the details and post here?

@ sushantr5

Do you know of any place where a retail customer can buy the HCL Leaptop cheaper than 14,999 (Croma price)? I don't need that crappy Indicom modem which they bundle along and call it free! I just need the leaptop at the cheapest possible price.

I read some where in online forum that retail price for HCL MiLeap is arount Rs.13800. I don't exactly remember where I but it is for sure it is available for less than Rs.14k.

All these electronic branded outlets are crap they sell at very higher rates. Only advantage is that we can experience big range of models. I would say experience/test your piece of electronics there and buy at your retailer.

if one can dis-mantle this, Put Screen to IN-DASH, and Keyboard and other parts to under Dash (under the AC buttons/console so its accessible), or some other place, I think this would be SMARTEST/cheapest CARPUTER.

I am visiting a HCL store soon. to see the possibilities.

Well I was interested a bit too. A bit of haggling got the chroma exec to offer it at 14k instead of 15k without the tata indicom modem along with some goodies like usb mouse, cleaner, etc etc
