A silly mistake by me fried the Pi before i realized and its story ended in a tragic burn out. Pictures of final setup below and as you can see i used all black wires inside it, hence didn't realize the 12v and 5v lines got interchanged during final assembly. otherwise it was good in function. |
oh! sorry to hear about that but your setup was very neat. Pi enclosure is very well done.
Did the touchscreen worked?

Now want to try out Intel DN2800NT. need a compatible hard disk for it for slim mount to push it in the slot where the OBD port of Octavia exists.
Other idea was to use the amkette evo tv in car but want a model with 1gb ram. |
Have you tried this MB Intel D2700DC?

I had actually ordered the board and then cancelled it from flipkart. Trying out they amkette evo tv how'd as its good for kid gaming also. If it flops in car use then can move it back to home theater anyways since I don't have smart tv.
are there any reviews on the touchscreen on sale on detna?

4.5K for a touchscreen is mighty cheap.
The price of the touchscreen & SSD were the only things holding me back from building a carPC. [that and not having a job right now]
does anyone think it a good idea to go in for it?
I'm upgrading my mum's PC in the next month or so,
So i'll have a an old comp to put in the car.
Here is what I am planning
Procc - Core2Duo [don't remember which model]
Motherboard - Again don't remember which model
RAM - currently 2GB [planning to get 4 or 8 GB]
SSD - 32/60 GB [Gotta Pick it up]
Monitor - 7" Touch screen [Gotta Pick it up]
PSU - I want the Opus 360 Watt, but that will be too expensive, any suggestions on a cheaper one?
Costing
4 GB of RAM - 1600
Touch screen - 4500
SSD - 4500
I will be running Windows 8 on it & eventually get a sound card and a fleet of pen drives to run my music off.. [like 10 64 GB pendrives connected to a USB multipoint]
Whaddya guys think?

Why 10 pendrives when you can get a 1 tb HDD for less ?

iRide one. works fine. its been over 3 years now. still working strong. not a single hiccups with hibernation or resuming.

Because they are solid state... I've had more than my fair share of Platter based HDDs fail due to vibrations. My friend had a portable HDD and after about 2 or 3 months of using it in the car, it just failed.
Just did the calculations, can get a 240 GB SSD for about the price of 10 64 gig pen drives...
So the plan is to get 2 or 3 Pen Drives and then upgrade to another SSD for all the Media
To the Gurus: I was considering SD Cards or some such solution, but the read speeds are very slow and if multiple functions are being performed it could degrade the performance of the system. So the question is do i have another option?

Cool just checked it out... and it's cheaper too!
To the Gurus: One more question.. what if their 160 Watt one doesn't provide enough juice? Is there any way i can connect 2 to get the required power?
I was toying around with the idea of having a graphics card as well so that i could have 3 independent screens running off one computer.
Sprucegoose.
My setup is still running fine without any single components failure. *touchwood*
proper ventilation and how you mount it in the cabinet is extremely important in carpc setup. 2.5-inch HDD can take quite good bumps and vibration. sure you can buy SSD for boot drive and regular 2.5-incher for media.
LB160D may not able to take load with the setup that you have in your mind. better to go for opus360. you will not save much if you are planning for 2 PSU setup. just rough estimation.
3 independent screens running off 1 board is quite possible. All new gen. mobo. can do that with onboard IGP.
I'll be doing it with my Core 2 Duo and its mobo... so if i do decide to got for 3 independent screens i'll need a gfx card.
As for the storage, I'd just rather go all teh way solid state
And if the budget permits get even the entire setup liquid cooled.
And an OPUS 360 costs close to 200 USD bro!!
I would suggest to keep the least no of components possible for a reliable setup.
Do calculate the load requirement for the total planned upgrade and buy power supply accordingly, paralleling two DC power supply is not recommended.

Noobie question :
How would you keep the onboard graphics working while there is a GPU installed ? I thought that gets disabled automatically once the mobo detects a GPU.
How 3 independent screens ? (Ah! Yes, GPU with all 3 connectors VGA, DVI & HDMI).

i don' think that is possible
@ sprucegoose: Regarding the PSU, i suggest you for this
http://www.ebay.com/itm/M4-ATX-250W-...item1c2b7844e2
I have used in my cousin's carputer (will open thread on it by this weekend).
The M4 ATX is rated 250W and caters well to the requirements of a carputer.
Here is a pic of the setup

@badboyscad which case is it ? can it accommodate sound card ?
