Ferrari to remove in-car navigation from all its future models; Better on smartphones

According to a media report, Ferrari will stop offering its own satellite navigation system on its future models. The Italian carmaker stated that the system is much better on smartphones, and hence, it plans to remove the feature entirely across all its models.

Future Ferrari models, including the new Purosangue & 12Cilindri, will not feature an in-car navigation system. Customers can instead use the feature on their smartphones. Emanuele Carando, Head of Product Marketing, Ferrari, stated that smartphones offer the 'most user-friendly" system, which is also regularly updated - making the in-car dedicated system mostly redundant. Carando stated that since Ferrari owners don't use their cars every day, it doesn't make sense to keep a system they rarely use.

Not just Ferrari owners, a majority of people worldwide use a smartphone, and according to Carando, they are "the most useful things they can use on every car."

Carando stated, "We did this because we think the phone, and the fantastic mirroring of the phone, is the most user-friendly possibility, and [the] most updated system." He further added, "Our cars are not used on an everyday basis, and we don't want our clients to learn every time [they drive their Ferrari] what kind of system they have to use. They have [their] phone, they have their Apple and Google Maps [or] whatever. So [they are] the most useful things they can use on every car."

Good reasoning offered and also cost saving for whatever it’s worth. Every little bit counts on a large scale.

Cheers

What loads of BS. Who are you guys to decide whether I use my car daily or not, or if I don't need the navigation or not. And if you really care about it being difficult to learn to operate, just make it more simple to use. Make it user friendly. They are definitely not decreasing the price after deleting that feature. You never know when your phone is dead in an unknown area and you need in car navigation. It is always good to have on the safer side.

Cost cutting that makes sense.
He's right, no point developing and updating in-car navigation when it's hardly ever used anyway.
And a Ferrari owner so desperately lost that they need to rely on the in-car navigation can easily phone the Ferrari helpline or whatever their version of roadside assistance is, who'll surely go out of their way to rescue their client.

Absolutely! I think you should cancel your Ferrari immediately!

I do hope they have Android Auto/Apple Carplay integration on the display. I have no clue if they do or not today, would never probably buy a Ferrari or think about it.

Also @elegant I am sure the car will definitely have phone charger so I don't see that as a blocking point. Just not Ferrari everyone should follow this, I have MMI on my hector but I still prefer Gmaps.

Car manufacturers should continue working with Google and Apple to keep making AA and Carplay much better.

A good mobile charger will be a much better option.

PS: All companies should also get rid of their in-car assistant as well. Google assistant and Siri are much better.

Going against the flow here, but I think we need to have a choice. There have been quite a few times when I have not been able to access either Apple or Google Maps, thanks to the lack of mobile connectivity. In every instance, it was the on-board maps that came to my rescue. I guess each one's milages vary and Auto-makers will go with the Majority

Re: Ferrari to remove in-car navigation from all its future models; Better on smartphones

All in-car navigation systems are well on the way of the dodo in the great skies beyond, if not already there. In-car navigation systems are clunky, need commercial licenses if they are to be updated, and totally out-of-date if not supported actively. What is the point of having an in-car navigation system that has out-of-date speed limit information, or worse, doesn't reflect changes such as reduced or increased lanes, one-ways and the like? Android-auto and Apple car-play are the only things anybody wants to use these days. I'm used to waze and would not like to use the in-car navigation in any car unless I don't have the option of using android-auto. The biggest gain that Ferrari make is not the few pennies they save on removing the software like many people seem to think; their biggest gain is actually ditching the responsibility of ensuring that the navigation information is kept current, and that it doesn't lead people astray, like the infamous Apple maps incident, where drivers got led out into the middle of a desert due to a glitch. They would like to focus on making great cars with great engines, and any airy-fairy frill that is a challenge to maintain and adds little or no value to their customers, yet would become a pain-point if they get it wrong, makes no sense to continue offering. Good riddance to all in-car navigation tools, I say. I can't wait to see them gone!

Yes what next, "Most owners prefer manual AC settings, we are deleting Auto AC, Most owners do not use traction control, we are deleting it. " The list will go on

Not really. Ferrari is one of those brands that leaves me totally underwhelmed. Outstanding engineering, but a company and by and large a customer base that I don’t want to be associated with.

Found out a good friend of mine, just up the road from me has owned a Ferrari 550 Maranello for quite some time. It sits in his garage. He hardly drives it because it is just too impractical and if you hit something too expensive to fix.

My friend is probably one of the odd out Ferrari owners. So I decided we can stay friends.

I am, occasionally looking at a nice second hand 456. These days those are going for cheap. But maintenance is a real pain. Still not sure how much I could do myself. Part prices are out of this world.

So, no I have not placed my Ferrari order yet. I could not care less what they do. I certainly would not get upset or offended by anything Ferrari does or does not do.

Ferrari caters for a clientele that is totally out of this world. I don’t want to be part of it. I don’t think any of us has a clue as to how the average Ferrari owner buys his/her Ferrari.

There is no point designing and coding an entire navigation system for a company that sells such a low amount of cars every year. It will always be years behind the billions being spent by phone manufacturers and Google on dedicated software development teams.
