Christmas Time!

Hello, what have we here?! Looks like Santa Claus came to town and left me three big boxes of goodies! So what if it ain't Christmas? You can't expect ol' Saint Nick to get it right every time, can you?

ICE for Phoenix-img_3593-medium.jpg

So, the kid in me springs to life and attacks the boxes with gusto!

What's inside box 1? Hmm, something radioactive, eh?!

ICE for Phoenix-img_3640-medium.jpg

Moving on to box 2, we have..... a BIG box!! How cool, a box in a box! And there seems to be a big hole in the big box, with white cotton-like stuff in it. I think Santa's getting old...

And now for the 3rd and final box. There's this silvery-rubbery kind of material - quite a lot of it in fact. Wonder what I'm supposed do with it...

ICE for Phoenix-img_3597-medium.jpg

Is that it? Seems like an awfully big box for just those silver sheets. Ah, there's something underneath!

Carbon? Eh? What kind? Diamonds, I hope! But then, it's apparently just an Illusion anyway!

These aren't new - bought them from a fellow BHPian who has gone the (ahem) way of the horns. No prizes for guessing who! From the looks of it, the speakers have been very well maintained, and should sound good too. This was a bit of a gamble for me, spending a good deal of money on speakers I've not auditioned personally. But, decided to trust the opinions of all and sundry on the forum who have reported love at first sound with the ND 6.1s. Hopefully the gamble will pay off

This choice was a bit of a tricky one too, and ended up being gamble #2. Heard and read many good things about this sub, and after several discussions with Ajay, decided to go for it.

The voice coils, which are 2 ohms each, are wired in series to show a 4 ohm impedance to the Infinity mono amp. Was looking for a DVC 4 and not a DVC 2 since the Infinity puts out 456W @4ohms and 657W @2ohms. But I was informed that the new XD-ALs have 2 ohm coils, and as Ajay reasoned, for all practical purposes 450-odd W RMS was more than sufficient. So, the XD-AL it was. I am told this sub is geared more towards SQ than SPL, and plays very nicely with the Carbons. We shall see! Err... hear

The rest of it...

Other accessories that came with the Carbons and XD-AL:

Sealed subwoofer box with foam(?) lining:

Neutrik connector for the sub:

ICE for Phoenix-img_3627-medium.jpg

2 x RCA y-splitters (will be used while wiring the Carbons... more on that later):

ICE for Phoenix-img_3630-medium.jpg

I've already mentioned the damping material, and I also got myself a subwoofer grille to keep the sub safe.

A special thanks goes out to Ajay for all his help, and to kumar_ranjan for deeming me worthy of his Carbons

So, the final setup in Phoenix has boiled down to this:

Head-unit: Clarion DXZ785USB
Front: Illusion Audio Carbon ND 6.1
Sub: Ground Zero RW 12 XD-AL
Amps:
- Ground Zero TA 4.120MKČ to drive the Carbons
- Infinity Reference 611a mono to drive the sub

There will be no rear fill.

I will be reusing the existing Stinger wiring kit, and adding a 4ga power/ground cable for the mono.

The install is scheduled for this weekend. Hoping for the best. Cheers!

Very nice friend..I like the design of the carbons. Mainly with the grill on.

Will you be Bi-Amping the components? Or are you making it an active setup?
Looking forward for your install

Congrats Razor.
Great equipment.
I hope you're gonna bi-amp it and not leave it just like that.
Also the Carbons i feel needs a bigger amp.
Just my opinion. Congrats again. Do post all install pics.

I won't be bi-amping or going active. To be honest, I don't have the knowledge or the equipment to tune an active/biamped setup. Now if the Hermit makes a journey to Kolkata, then maybe I can persuade him to help out...

As per Ajay's advice, I will be bridging the GZ amp to run the Carbons. So basically, 2 channels per set of tweeter+midbass. So there's no chance of running them underpowered.
By the way, this is why those RCA Y-splitters will be needed.

Umm , power ain't everything is it ?

Now a Steg in place of the GZ amp would surely look more in-line with the equipment !

Next year maybe
