I have had the Passat since November 2012 and have used it for almost all the long drives that we have been on, except for our last trip to Himachal, where we had to take the Ford Ecosport to tackle the terrain. The Passat is a very comfortable car, good trunk space and has great fuel economy.
We have driven the following routes in the Passat:-
1. Mumbai to Jaisalmer via Ahmedabad and back via Jodhpur, Udaipur and Vadodara in 2013 (2571 kms)
2. Mumbai to Coorg via Pune & Mysore and back via Bangalore and Pune in 2014 (2897 kms)
3. Mumbai to Lakhpat (Kutch) via Ahmedabad, Dholavira, and back via Devpur, Bhuj, Dhordo and Ahmedabad in 2018 (2677 kms)
4. Countless trips to Pune and back as we have an apartment there.
In 2018, we bought a Ford Ecosport. This car has the Sync 3. In a short span of time I was thoroughly enjoying driving this car largely due to the Apple Carplay / Android Auto, which provided me with Google Maps, Waze, Spotify, Apple Music. The Sync 3 also reads messages, whatsapp and one can reply to them without using the phone. Then we bought a Honda Jazz in Feb 2020; the head unit had similar features.
I was seriously contemplating an upgrade to the Passat; the head was saying yes and the heart was saying no. Sometimes, it was the other way around. Then the pandemic struck and everything went into lockdown mood including my thought of upgrading the Passat. The first few weeks of the lockdown gave me time to think whether I should sell the car. The Passat has given me trouble free service (apart from the infamous ABS Sensor replacements) and had been driven only 48K kms. The car has very good features and is very well maintained if only I could upgrade the Head Unit?
Thus began my search for upgrading the Head Unit. I contacted Sugesh of Vagtune, Kochi and he told me that he can offer an RCD 340G+ or better still a MIB STD2 PQ+ NAV. Both are plug & play, except that the MIB STD2 PQ+ NAV unit is VIN specific and the quality of sound from this unit is far superior to the RCD 340G+. The RVD 340G+ is now fitted on the Vento & Polo. Before buying the Honda Jazz, we had test driven the Vento TSI, which had the RCD 340G+ and we found it ok. Being an audiophile, I decided to bite the bullet and go for the MIB STD2 PQ+ NAV. Sugesh told me that I would lose the Climatronic display in the Unit which I ok with. All other features would be the same, with the addition of Apple Carplay / Android Auto and Navigation (he would load maps for me). In addition, since my rear view camera is the old RGB type, he would provide me with a RGB to Composite Video adapter.
The difference between the existing RCD510 and the MIB STD2 PQ+ NAV is below:-
Features RCD 510 / MIB STD2 PQ+ NAV
Touch Screen Yes / Yes
Radio Yes / Yes
CD Player 6 CDs / 1 CD
Climatronic Display Yes / No
Optical Parking Sensors Yes / Yes
Reversing Camera Yes / Yes
Steering Wheel Controls Yes / Yes
Apple Carplay/Android Auto No / Yes
Bluetooth Telephone Yes / Yes
GPS with maps No / Yes
I paid him 50% advance and provided him the VIN of my car. Then started the long ordeal of waiting for the unit to arrive. Due to the ban on international flights, consignments were getting significantly delayed.
I finally received the unit on 24th September after paying him the balance amount, here is what I got:-

Front View

Top View (Unit made by Technisat, Spain)
The unit came with a separate microphone for direct connection to the system, which has A2DP integrated; unlike the RCD510 which has a separate bluetooth module located under the driver's seat.
The Quadlock connector is also different from the one in the RCD510; I was supplied with an adapter, shown below
A separate USB/Aux connector was also provided, shown below
Since I intended to use the original camera (RGB type) of the car, which is integrated in the VW symbol, I was supplied with an RGB to CVBS adapter, shown below
The wiring needed to be done by a person who is conversant with removing panels in cars, so I contacted my friend Rahul Gurnani of Rhyme n Rhythm and we set up a date for the fitment.
In the meantime, I removed the existing RCD510 and connected the MIB Unit to test its functions. The radio, Apple Carplay, Steering controls, Bluetooth telephone & OPS were all working. I did not connect the GPS antenna and since I was not sure of the rear view camera connections, I did not hook up the adapter.
I found that the rear view camera was not wired into the quadlock for the new head unit.
The white connector with the black wire has 4 wires, red, black, yellow & black. From online searches, I realized that the red is 12V+, black is Gnd, Yellow is Composite Video and black is Gnd. Now where to connect these 4 wires?
The connector with the red wire is to be connected to the reversing light, so that the camera gets the signal to operate.
I started searching online for connection diagrams for the quadlock, finally I found this one and confirmed the wiring from Sugesh of Vagtune.
On 3rd October, I installed the new system in the car and found everything operating, except the Rear View Camera and that the OPS display is showing a Polo instead of a Passat.

I would very much appreciate if any of you could guide me in rectifying these two issues.
I have contacted Sugesh of Vagtune many times; he keeps saying that he is very busy and will help me next week - two weeks have passed this way :Frustrati
Very neat DIY. This is frankly a must for most of the pre facelift Jetta and Passat Mk7 owners. My Jetta Comfortline doesn't even get USB input, forget bluetooth :Frustrati
Coming to your query of a Polo being displayed in the OPS instead of a Passat, refer to post number 3 on this thread by Gannu. This is to be done through VCDS.

I will try it over the weekend. To the best of my knowledge the Radio (Channel 56) in the Installation List supports the RCD510 whereas one has to go to 5F Information Electronics for the MIB Unit.
Meanwhile, after switching over to the new unit I was experiencing difficulty in using the Phone from the MFSW and the display between the Speedo/Odo was behaving erratically. Yesterday it struck me that the original Bluetooth Module in the car (located under the drivers seat) was also connected. I disconnected the harness and now I can control the phone from the MFSW. :)
Will post updates !
Ananth,
I tried with my VCDS; as expected the Radio (Channel 56) shows "Cannot be reached".
Channel 5F (Information Electronics) is not available in the Installation List in the CAN Gateway.
I also understand that coding this MIB requires a UDS protocol. The VCDS recognises the new MIB Unit, but it does not show up on the Installation List nor does it show up when I do an Auto Scan.
Screenshots below
I was told that the software in my car needs to be updated in order for the CAN Gateway to recognise 5F; wonder if its the right thing to do?
Hope someone on this forum can guide me
How is the sound quality compared to rcd510 ?

There is a significant improvement in the sound quality. For one, the MIB Unit has a better amplification and the user interface is also better. I was considering replacing the stock speakers - now having second thoughts :)
A bit more of fiddling around and I found that the VCDS does communicate with the MIB through the 5F channel.
I managed to change the display in the Park Pilot from the Polo to a Passat.

Open the VCDS and select 5F - Information Electronics. Please note that the communication is through the UDS protocol as see on the top left of the picture

Go to Coding and select Long Coding. Note down the Long Coding before attempting any changes

Go to Byte 0-2 and select Passat as shown
Exit and get Controller to "Do It". Once it shows that the coding is accepted; Do a reset of the MIB Unit by pressing the Power button for 15 seconds. On restarting and engaging the car in reverse, the following image is seen
Feeling very happy that the VCDS can make changes in 5F.
Now next step is to get the RVC (Rear View Camera) working !

I am not aware of the cost of the RCD330+, therefore I cannot comment. However, the sound quality in the MIB is far superior. Besides the MIB has a lot more features like a CD player & separate navigation system.
RCD330 plus with android auto cost 28k INR .

Where did you get this quote from? I want to upgrade my Polo's stock RCD320 unit to an RCD330g 187B version that supports Android Auto and Apple Carplay.
@rpunwanj
Nice upgrade. I have been planning the same for my 2015 Jetta.
Could you share the cost. There is another seller now called German DNA in Bangalore but originally from Kerala. Interacted with them only on phone. Seemed OK.
Not understood why the climatronics info is not shown. It is supposed to be an OE replacement.

Please check the cost with German DNA.
The climatronics is not shown because the new MIB unit does not have the software for showing the climatronics. This was not an issue for me as my Passat has a digital display for the 2-zone climate control and I have it set at 22 deg C.
I did contact German DNA regarding the RVC issue with my Passat. Mr. Ajeesh was very informative and told me that the existing RVC (RGB type) is connected to a Camera Module located in the right side of the trunk. For details, please see this thread
https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/techn...ra-module.html
This module in the Highline version of the Passat apparently controls the steering wheel inputs & is not compatible with a new CVBS type camera.
I was told that the entire Flip Camera would have to be replaced (24k for a OEM one made in China & 29k for an OEM one made in Germany, with the new VW logo) and I would lose the steering wheel input track lines. However, if I was willing to spend 45k, this could be incorporated.
Now, should I go for the 24K camera, or the 29k one ? Or is there a more economical solution ??
I would appreciate valuable inputs from our dear members.
