Now that i am back in Bangalore, i am ready to upgrade my ICE. Samirji, Navinji, Gunbir and Speedzak....help me please!!!

I have decided to upgrade my speakers as well as HU in 2 steps (just to even out the expenses in 2 separate months...) First being the speakers as the old ones have gone kaput. I am looking at SQ and not SPL. I have a WagonR.

1. I have narrowed down into Polk db690 for the rear. Costs any idea? Kumar's in Bangalore seems to be the only authorized dealer for Polk as of now.
2. For the front stage, i am really confused between MMC 525 (MOMO series: no tweeter:only ext. crossover) and db5250 (both tweeter and ext. crossover). I know that MOMO is definitely better than db, and want to go with the MMC 525, but would the missing tweeter hamper the SQ in anyway? MMC 525 is cheaper than db5250 (as per PolkAudio website)

Samirji, i talked to Preetam (Sound Factor), he said that 6 inch compos cannot be fitted in WagonR front (You had suggested for better SQ). He was suggesting 4 inches only, and said he can fit the 5.25 Inch compos, but the door pads have to be cut, which i dont mind.

I may add a 4 channel amp to power the Polks in future (no Sub), depending how many years i want to keep the car.

Second part:
I have a Sony CDX 5500, which as usual skips a lot and recently refuses to read even brand new CDs sometimes (My car is not used for 3 months at a stretch sometimes). I wanted the Pioneer 6850, but would Alpine/Blaupunkt deliver better SQ and be able to handle the MOMOs better than Pio 6850? If yes, which models? What cost? My HU budget is 10K (I can stretch a bit).

Looking forward to your invaluable suggestions.

1. what is the total budget you expect for the speakers, HU, etc... I ask becuase with a Wagon R I would suggest damping the front doors. The one WR I heard needed damping. SO you have to budget for the damping as well.

2. Get woofers AND tweeters for the front. Just component woofers wont do. If yo cant afford a component woofer and tweeter get a coxial but make sure the entire freq. range from 50hz to 20kHz, is covered. a Component woofer will go only as high as 4kHz. It needs a tweeter beyond that.

3. 5.25" speakers will fit in the front door.

4. No Alpine sells for less than 10K. The 6850 or similar Blaupunkt will drive your speakers just as well as an Alpine the rest is a matter of taste (visual and aural).

15K max for speakers and 10K for HU.
For damping material, do you mean something like Dynamat? Would i have to apply these in all 4 doors, or only the front ones would do. There is a product called Dynamat Extreme available in US, Dynamat 10435 Xtreme Door Kit With four 12'' x 36'' sheets at Crutchfield.com. These are enough for front 2 doors. They have 4, 1 feet X 3 Feet sheets. How much is it worth in India? Otherwise i can source them from US as well (US $ 90 = INR 4000 approx.)

Navinji, I checked the Polk site. The MOMO MMC525 Details:

Overall Frequency Response53Hz-25KHz
Nominal Impedance4 ohms
Power Handling (continuous)70 w
Power Handling (peak)140 w
Efficiency89 dB

MMC525 Car Audio Speaker from Polk Audio
The frequency response is 53Hz to 25KHz. This means i do not need the tweeters right? So i can go with the MMC525?

Welcome back to India. You could've come a month earlier and would've been game for Sam's party!

After reading both your posts, I'm sure you are pretty much fixed on Polks! I have almost zero listening experience with them. So, to comment on that? I'll be bluffing!!! rl:

Some other things which may matter to you;
WagonR's front door pads are a bit of a complicated piece of #&@*!!! They're designed in such a way that no speakers can be fitted into them without chopping some bit out of it. But if a good installer can take care of that chopping part, then even a 6.5 woofer is fixable. Some MDF work will be necessary. So, be ready to chop those crappy plastic pieces out of your door pads.

Damping is very much essential. Keep some budget for it.
(You're already back here! Otherwise you could've bought some Dynamat Extreme or Wurth from US and brought it with you.)
Dont worry, Fonomat and Wurth etc.. are also available locally. You can buy it from Sprocket or Soundfactor.

Get that 4 channel amp soon and change the HU also. I would suggest to get the amp first and then HU.

What NavinJi says is true. Woofers alone won't be sufficient in the front. Buy a decent component system to get your imaging right.

Nice decision to upgrade in 2 steps according to your budget and not jumping in with a small budget and aiming high!!

First, the Polk Momo's are way better than the dBs. But if you go for the Momos consider an amp for them. They will like the power. If you have no intentions of ever installing an amp in this car, stick with the dBs.

Secondly, please dont get these installed in the rear. Go to someone like Anwar who can mod your doors to fit these in. The WagonRs doors arent exactly easy to work with.

More, there is an Alpine 9843 (IIRC...) that retails for like 9k with B&W. But it has only one preout.

Lastly, what will you be paying for the Momos. Cuz others here may have other suggestions for you in that price range.

Edit: we have some near new (tested only) Momos lying around with us. If you want them, PM me.

To put it in a nutshell

PM>dB

I sure did. Anyways, everybody tells me Samir'ji keeps on having these and would definiotely be game for the next one. Though a novice myself, i like company of people like you.
Would damping the front doors be enough. Anwar @ contact details anyone?
Last week, i visisted SF. Preetam said he would not charge any installation charges. I was happy with that, but i am not sure whether he would be able to make a professional install for the fromt compos in the front door. Has anyone done that from SF? But again if i stick with Polk, i dont think SF would do the install for me. Then i may have to go to someone like Anwar.
I can still source dynamat/wurth from US. Someone or the other keeps on traveling to US from my company. Please confirm whether only 2 fr doors are required or all 4.

Navin'ji/speezak, i was wrong. The MMC525 comes with tweeters, they are sort of fused with the coaxials and they has a feature: you can tilt these upto 15 Degrees.

Yes i would add a 4 ch. AMP, but i want to get the HU first, as my current HU does not play 90% of CDs. :-(. Yes i dont want to get everything is one shot. I would like to do good research and then buy things in steps.

Gunbir: Kumar's in Bangalore are the only distributors for Polk. Does anyone know anyone else? Kumar's is in JC Road and its not possible for me to go there on a weekday. I would go and find it out this weekend and find out the prices.

samir'ji: Thanks

PFM on Mission Road should have it, and should be able to do a good job installing it too. Anwar is great too, but it just might work out better if you install it the same place you buy it from. And yeah, Polk Momos are real nice speakers.

HV - I'm sure you did not understand why Sameer-ji posted that shock smiley but let me elaborate. Our dear old Sameer does not like to be addressed by his full name & certainly not with a "JI" added after it :D
So from now onwards please call him Sam!!

Haha...to be frank..i also did not get it. Actually i respect people who has better knowldge than me, irrespective of age.

H-V,

First I have to apploise. I assumed you would be installing only the woofer from your MMC525 package and not using the supplised tweeter (dont ask me why but after seeing 3 subs and 4 tweeter installs on this forum I expect anything).

If you are using the eintire woofer-tweeter-crossover from the MMC525 it will outperformt he db speaker esp if you help it along with a nice amp (the cheapest amp for this would the Pio 6200 at about 7K). THe Sony 554 is to aggressive (we can even say harsh) for the already bright Polks.

Q: Are you sold on Polk or are you consdiering others?

A: Given your budget (15K for 2 pairs of speakers) I dont see how you can afford Momos atleast not at Indian prices. One option might be Mono components in the front and db Coax in the rear.

B: The Alpine 9843 is bettered by the 9826 at 2-3K more. The Gurus have concored on this on another thread.

C: The Wagon R as Gunbir pointed out is not an audio friendly car. It's door panels resonate quite a bit (unlike for example the Opel Astra/ Corsa or Octavia) and would be much better of with a packet of Wurth/Fonomat/Dynamat. Another "problem" I see is that there are no front tweeter pods on the Wagon R (whatever was Maruti thinking :-) ) so you have to consider how to install the tweeter if you are looking at components for the front.

D: If your budget is limited to 25k.....there is a stickyonthis forum for Stereos under 30K which you can use a ready reckoner and, YES, I am a shamrless, self promoting moderator. :-)

Navin, No apologies please. Actually i was a novice and from the picture of the MMC525, i thought there were no tweeters. But actually there were.

No, i am not solely sold on MOMOs. I went to Preetam (SF) and heard both JBL and Infinity. Infifnity is definitely better (at a bigger price of course). Would Alpine Type R/S come in this price range (2 pairs = 15K?). Also i would be going to Pro-Drive today to check if they have Alpine Type R/S and prices.

WagonR doors are pieces if S^&T. I am worried about the Install and dont want an unprofessional install. Dont know maybe at last i have to stick to the small 4". :-(. I have thought (not decided) to put the tweeters nesr the fromt coax, as i read elsewhere in this forum that its better to place them together to get better SQ. I am correct right?

Alpine, Balupunkt and Pioneer are in my eyes. I would check out models/prioces today at Pro-Drive. I would have a advantage. As i said i would go in for HU/speakers in separate months, i can buy the HU depending on what kind of speaker setup i get this month. So i would have another reason to ask you GURUS questions on that. Few days back Sam mentioned that Pio P80 is a good HU, but the Pioneer site says its a Older Model. Is it still available? Price?

I would get back to you people today after i visit Pro-Drive. I am planning to get the speakers on the Christmas Weekend.

One more question, i currently have a tray with my "fake" Sony speakers. I should remove and get the MDF boxes right? My only question is if the MDF bxes are placed in the rear (on top of the spare wheel), wont the rear seat back block the sound reaching the driver(me)? I always drive :-). Cannot afford to be driven....

I Went to Pro-Drive. Abdul was not there as he had gone for Friday Prayers. I asked the mechanic if they had fit any Polk Momos. He said no and said Pioneer and Sony are the ones they have fixed most. He also had MB Quart/Focal, but couldn;t comment on the prices. However, the mechanic guy was quite confiden of fitting the Componenets in WagonR front door. But again he didn'y knew what is a damping material. He said they never use it.

Can someone tell me a place in Bangalore (except Car Shringar)where they keep Polks and do fitting confidently and also keep damping materials like Wurth/Dynamat? I would prefer a shop in and around North Bangalore/near MG Road area.

If I was in Bangy I'd go to Deepak Asrani (if he'd have me) or Anwar/Thoqeer (Sound Fusion I think their shop is called).

Please do NOT use Sony speakers esp not those Xpold ones. I am sure you'll find others that are more satisfying.

At 15K per 2 pair plus damping you are really looking at 3K for the damping, 7K for the front components, and 5K for a pair of rear 6x9s. I'd look at Infinty Reference, Alpine Type R and Hertz Hi-Energy.

BTW I spent 5 mins in the rear seat of a Wagon R and promptly insisted on being allowed to sit in the front. Fortunately I was the most aged (of those present) and was allowed that privilige. That car bounces a bit especially in the rear. "Maturity" has it's prviliges even if you cant bend and touch your toes anymore. ;-)

Cant tell you anything about the audio bit, but can give you anwar's number. - 98860-37737 He is in koramangala and the name of the shop is Auto fusion

Best of luck
