DIY: Multimedia player for a car's DVD player

A solution for 'Multi video format' issues in a car DVD player (single Din or double Din).

Advantage:
- Media player can be stuck to any part of the dash. No clamps or holes needed.
- The player can handle any format & input type (USB, HDMI, SD or HDSC card).
- External hard-drive of any GB memory can be recognized.
- Handy cam recording can be instantly played back on HDMI input.
- Slideshow of personal photos with background music of your choice.
- No compressed format, so picture quality & sound quality are top class.

A bit of Info

As per my knowledge, any car DVD player will have AV-in aux. This option is useful in many ways. My setup will make maximum use of this.

Project unit details

1. Mini multimedia player. Cost: Rs 2500.
2. 4 pole 3.5 mm AV cable (male cable came with the multimedia player).
3. Step down Transformer (came with the multimedia player).
4. 150 watt Inverter. Cost: Rs 800

If one can find or build a 0.5 amp & 5V DC to DC step-down transformer, the multimedia player transformer & inverter can be eliminated.

I did try, but it didn't work. The player needs a constant 0.5 amp & 5V supply when media is loaded. Finally, I decided to go for the above setup.

I have done this with what I have & what I want. No logical thoughts on cost factor or anything else.

Work details

First step, minor changes in the Inverter.

To leave the 12v DC socket alone, I opened the Inverter & pulled the positive & negative wire which I later connected to the car's DVD player. I made sure the positive wire with 10 amps fuse was connected to the Deck.

This wiring will make sure the media player will switch off along with the head-unit.

Second step, plug in the player eliminator to the Inverter & bundle it with a tape to make sure they stay as a unit. Find the right place to hide the unit. Behind the glovebox can be one of the options.

Now, DC power is ready for the player.

Third step completely depends on camouflaging the AV-In, AV-Out cable & DC wire connected to the player. Finding the right slot for the player (Velcro is the best option for fixing). A removable type will keep ‘using indoor option’ open.

Visuals of my work

1. Complete unit with wiring.

2. Player Dimension.

3. Demo on my Father’s Polo. The unit is connected to the double Din.

Later, the unit was fixed to my van. The van has a single din head-unit & 10.1 inch screen monitor.

More than me, my children are happy. They carry their own hard-drive full of their favorite episodes. The funny thing is, before they decide what to play, we reach the destination.

One small request, please consider this Mod in a lighter way.

Hope, my Media player setup was interesting.
Thanks.

Re: DIY: Multimedia player for a car's DVD player

Hi Narendra,
Nice setup, would like to know few things,
1. Where is this USB socket available, will electronics shop have it?
2. Can this setup fixed in a car cassette player?

I have a pioneer cassette player and not upgraded to disc player which has an aux button

Thanks for your replies folks

1.USB option is already there in the Media player. All you have to do is plug in any flash drive or external Hard Disc using normal USB cable. It also has a sd card slot(the second photo, to the right).

2.No, Media player does not work with your cassette player. The AV-in aux option has to be in the Deck & Screen is a must. That’s the only way to see & play the files stored.

Re: DIY: Multimedia player for a car's DVD player

Thanks for your reply Narendra,

I will rephrase my query

1. This 'media player' is available in electronic store, what is it locally called as? The last time I went searching for it, I was shown super cheap audio HU with USB and SD card socket costing about Rs 700 and meant to be fitted in Autorikshaws.

2. Is there any way to use USB pendrive in a cassette player? I know that it is not a straight plug and play, what mods to make? (would like to put my HU's amplifier to use)

This is for only audio use, not interested in videos

Andy

PS Can the humble cassette player be put to use or it needs to be pulled out and thrown away?

Re: DIY: Multimedia player for a car's DVD player

If your cassette player has a FM radio, get a FM Transmitter which also provides a USB & sd card option. For the Transmitter to work it needs a 12v socket.
In my opinion, discard the cassette player.

Hi Andy,

DIY: Multimedia player for a car's DVD player-_12.jpg

You can buy a cassette adapter from eBay for some 425 rupees or if you prefer to go DIY then you can make yourself in an expense of around 150 rupees. You would just need

1. Stereo Cassette Head
2. Old Cassette
3. Head wire
4. 3.5mm stereo jack

Instructions can be found at eHow

I had bought one of these some 12 years back. Used to play CDs on a portable CD player through the cassette player of the HU. CD-based HUs were rare and costly those days.

How the world of HUs has changed in the last 10 years - cassette players went out, CD players came in, and now we have disc-less HUs!

Take your player to SP Lane (Canara Bank end) and ask around at the smaller shops if they can fit an external USB based player. This is usually a small China-made board which reads USB and SD Cards. They use this board to make the dinky little players installed in autos. The audio output of this board is connected to either the HU main board (Pre-amp point, replacing an existing audio input) or the CD changer port at the back if your HU has one.

If your Cassette player has the IP BUS connector, it should be possible to have a similar setup (Media player + Audio though AUX) Adding AUX to old Pioneer HU is discussed in the below thread

Re: DIY: Multimedia player for a car's DVD player

Nice DIY!

I was researching a solution to play usb/media card and still be able to view tracks and use the HU control and steering controls for my W204.

came up with this

http://www.ycarlink.com/1456_Digital...hanger-M06.htm

However wasnt able to get enough guidance on whether it was compatible with my W204 HU, so kinda gave it up.

Grace that solution may work for you.

Not to hijack the thread, but if anyone has worked out a solution for the Merc C class W204, please do post.

Re: DIY: Multimedia player for a car's DVD player

A small update on my Media Player fitting.
After searching trough the internet I was able to procure the DC to DC converter(12V to 5V with 2A).
Now, I can get rid of the unwanted bulky DC to AC converter which was used for the provided AC Adopter.

A small cute converter.

Media Player fitted onto the Dash.

The Player in use.

No more formatting or compress headache. Now I can watch HD videos.
It can handle up to 2 TB HDD. HDMI at the back.
