When you get a chance, please let us know the following:
1. What resolution have you kept for both front and rear dash cam for recording?
2. How much mins/hours of recording can be stored in the 128gb SD card before it is overwritten?

Thanks!

Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

I have booked new Amaze and looking for Dashcam (planning to get it installed by dealership before delivery or during 1st service)

Dealer is recommending the Philips dashcam ( I have seen mixed reviews for it), has anyone used it recently?

Also I was planning dual channel dashcam , is it possible to get from Amazon and install it DIY or should I get it done at dealership only ?

You can find pretty good quality dashcams by little bit of search online (and of course within this thread). No need to go with dealer as they usually don't keep popular models. You can buy it yourself and get it installed thru an accessories shop if you are not comfortable with DIY. As long as it is not hard wired/no wires cut, there is no issue with warranty. It simply gets powered via the 12W cigarettes lighter port.

There are popular dual channel models from 70Mai, Viofo etc depending on features and budget.

Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

Noob question.

I got myself a Viofo A119 Mini 2. I don't want to void my warranty. Is there any advantage of hard wiring the kit? I don't want to record any videos while parking or when car is not in motion, however I want a clean installation without wires being very visible.

Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

Hello! Need your help on below.
I got 70mai A510 dual dashcam recently. I purchased it from a local car accessories shop and installation was done by him. It is installed in my Figo and is powered via 12V cigarette lighter socket. Unlike some other cars, Figo's 12V socket continues to draw power from the battery even after car is switched off.
I did mention this to the dealer and he assured there is setting in cam's app which turns off camera after 5 mins post car is parked. I observed this works as intended.
However the problem I later found out is, when you start the car next time, dashcam isn't switched on automatically. It is to be turned on manually. This is mentioned in the app settings.

How do I fix this? Two options I think of are, either I hard wire dashcam or I change the 12V socket's fuse settings so that it turns off after car is off.
But I am not sure if latter is possible. Has anyone found a fix for this?

Hardwiring has couple of advantages as you already pointed out - parking surveillance and totally concealed wiring. Another advantage is that you need not worry about cam getting unplugged due to lose socket etc.

Regular installation via 12V cigarette lighter port is good enough if you are not keen on parking surveillance. Please verify that the port turns off when engine is turned off as some cars may have always ON port.

This installation may not provide as cleaner look as hard wiring but most of the wire can still be tucked inside roof liner/side panels to give a relatively cleaner look. Please keep an eye though, if your car has curtain/side airbags so as to not tinker with it while tucking wires. Only sore view would be little bit of wire dangling out of the 12V socket until it turns behind the glove box.

There are many DIY YT videos, but if you are not comfortable then accessories shop technician should be able to do it for you.

Update - Got this fixed. Went to the same guy, and he installed additional 12V socket concealed behind glove box. It's connected to fuse which turns off after ignition is turned off.
He didn't charge anything. This is cheaper solution over hard wiring.

So regarding the CPL filter fitment. The filter works well, it's just that one shouldn't be mindlessly fitting it( like the way I did before ).
The principle of this filter is to nullify the light coming from a specific direction, which means it needs to be placed in the correct angle by which it can do that. Easiest way to identify this angle is to turn on your dashcam, ,view the video( either via app or the dashcam itself ), place the filter in front of the lens and slightly turn it clockwise or anti clock wise direction. You'll observe that at a certain angle the dashboard reflection almost completely reduces. That's the position in which the filter is to be placed.

This is before I kept the filter. Do note the Ganesha idol reflection on the dashboard

This one is after placing the filter in the correct angle.

Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

Hello everyone,

I’m looking to upgrade the DDPAI dashcam in my Crysta to a model with better night vision and improved number plate readability. Since my car is parked in the open and exposed to the intense heat of North Indian summers, I’d prefer a super capacitor based dashcam.

I need a front-facing dashcam and plan to move the DDPAI to the rear. The only option I’ve found so far is the VIOFO dashcams, but they are a bit beyond my budget.

I’ve considered the 70mai, but it has a battery, and Qubo doesn’t feature STARVIS 2.
Am I missing any other good alternatives? Also, is the difference between STARVIS and STARVIS 2 significant?

Lastly, are there any dashcams with live-streaming capabilities? While Mapple (MapmyIndia) and One Lap offer this feature, their camera quality is subpar, and the subscription plans are expensive (₹7,000+ per year).

Looking forward to your recommendations!

Just got it installed yesterday. Will put out a review later.

1. I am planning to use 4K/30 fps for front and rear for city driving (~50%) and 2.5K/60 fps for front and 4K/30 fps for rear for highways.

2. On the F77, a 1 min video, based on HEVC (H.265) coding will consume 238MB at 4K/30 fps for Front and 182 MB at 4K/30 fps for Rear. H.264 coding will consume more space. On a 128 GB eMMC storage. I can get around 5.2 hours of recording for front and rear cameras put together, in this set-up.

Similarly, a 1 min video, will consume 147 MB at 2.5K/60 fps for Front and the same 182 MB at 4K/30 fps for Rear (there is no 2.5K option for rear). On a 128 GB eMMC storage, I can get around 6.5 hours of recording for front and rear cameras put together, in this set-up.

Hope this helps.

There aren't many options with a super capacitor and Starvis 2 sensor. This is the best bet for front only: https://viofo.in/product/viofo-a119-...VoHHAEbrCcxULx

If you do a lot of night driving, Starvis 2 will be better for capturing number plates.

If Starvis 2 is not a must you can look at the DDPAI Ace2: https://www.amazon.in/NEXDIGITRON-AC...6056037&sr=8-3

Hey, I'm from Pune as well and will receive my dashcam in a few days.
Can you tell me the installation costs involved, and the shop location which helped to install your dashcam cleanly?

The only quality that matters in night time is the ability to record the number plates clearly. Non Starvis 2 cameras are absolutely dogsh*t when it comes to that.
Travel Tech YouTube channel has done this comparison multiple times.
Thanks, @vellatechie.

After some more research and discussions with couple of distributors, I decided to go with Botslab 980H for it's
- 4K recording
- 170 deg viewing angle
- Supercapacitor
- ADAS features
- UHD night vision
- Non-Chinese product.

Both the distributors, one of them introduced to me by my Garage friend and another one I found though his videos came in as primarily dealing with 70mai products. But, both came out not recommending 70mai quoting reasons like non-capacitor based solution, Chinese product, etc. One of them mentioned about some privacy concerns which US Govt is investigating. He did not share more details. So, I had no way to confirm or rule out that statement. Both independently recommended Botslab 980H. You may not find many reviews from India, but can find many from the UK and and the US.

Got it shipped overnight from the distributor in Chennai via Blue Dart, installed and setout for the holiday trip. Got back over the weekend. Yet to look at the recordings in detail, but from a basic assessment the recordings looks clear enough and I'm able to read number plates of two wheelers (night time) clear enough. It doesn't have Starvis sensor. Will share some pictures later. The ADAS feature appear to be quite impressive. It's claiming to be AI powered, which most of the new products claim these days. But, not looked at it from that angle yet.

The person who installed the product, supposed to be a third party installer recommended by my Car service advisor, did not do the hardwiring properly. Need to get that sorted out.

Link to the product for reference: https://global.botslab.com/products/dash-cam-g980h

Rex

Hey
Congratulations on your purchase. This dashcam is rated very highly on amazon.com and on Amazon.ca. It must be a good.

Also on those platforms in one of the screenshots it mentions STARVIS lens Sony 415 to be precise.

Also, I did a search with "70mai US Investigation" but couldn't find anything. Do you have a link for the claim?

Thanks, @vellatechie.

Yes, it does have Starvis sensor with Sony IMX 415 low light module. Wrongly typed 'doesn't' and was not able to edit that later. My bad.

No, I do not have any links/reference regarding the privacy issue except a verbal conversation with the distributor. So, I'm not very sure of the authenticity of that.
