I've been using this one for a few months now, and quite happy with it, except for the observation that 12 GB out of the 32 GB card appear to be progressively eaten up by the unit and is not available for my use. The front cam has a 170° field of view and is 1920x1080. the rear is just 720x480. You can go through some my earlier posts here about my experiences and mods with this unit.

Also, going through this thread, found SJCAM SJ4000 action cam. The video looked good and its multiple uses is tempting.
Within 10k for the front; you have a lot of options to choose from.

Couple of more questions -

Are you looking for the small & discreet variety or any form factor is fine?

Will you be running the dash cams 24/7? For that you'll need a battery discharge prevention capable hardwire kit or something like the Vico power plus.

SJCAM will outperform most dash cams during the day but will be considerably worse than the same dash cams at night due to the larger MP count and resulting smaller pixels.

Currently overlooking size factor, as all the cams sizes that I saw are ok for me.
The dash cam will be running only when the tank is moving.

Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

I ordered this dash cam from aliexpress.com

Here is the link
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Origi...5-7dc436eda270

I downloaded the aliexpress app on the phone, as they were giving discount on the mobile orders. The delivery happened well within the allotted time limit.

What i like
1. Less expensive than other available products
2. Checked for authenticity, and it's a genuine product (G1W-GS108)
3. Picture quality is topnotch. (1080P)
4. It has an option of loop recording, which enables one to keep continuous recording on. So in this option, it records small 5 minutes videos till the memory card is full, and once its full, the first video gets over written. There is an option of making the videos of 2 minutes also for loop recording.
5. Impact video is saved and not over written.
6. Has motion sensors with option to start auto recording when motion detected.
7. I am currently using a 64GB microSD card, which allows around 10 hours of recording time at 1080P.
8. Finally, does the job what it's intended to do, perfectly.

What i don't like
1. The plastic quality is not so good as the other competitors.
2. Buttons on the camera are a bit hard to operate.

How it arrived

Wiring runs through the A pillar, straight down, from underneath the driverside floor mats and into the 12V socket in between the front seats.
I'm planning to hard wire it soon. So that it can turn on/off with ignition.

Fitted almost behind the rear view mirror

I will soon upload a youtube link of the video quality. But my suggestion is that its the best one available dashcam in the market for the cost.

Ideally dash cams should be small and discreet. If size and discretion is not a factor, here are a few suggestions-

1) Transcend DrivePro 200 - http://www.amazon.in/Transcend-TS16G.../dp/B00GRYT5QI
2) Transcend DrivePro 220 - http://www.amazon.in/Transcend-Drive.../dp/B00U701N72

These are probably the best option considering availability of local warranty & support.

Rest are from overseas suppliers.

The best option for a dual channel system - Lukas LK-7950 - 1080p Sony IMX322 sensors for the front and back. GPS, WiFi, OBD support, Android and iOS apps available, plus a load of other features not available in most dash cams. Little expensive but will cover both front and back in one package. The rear camera records at 24fps 1080p and a lower bitrate hence the video quality for the back is not as good as the front camera which records at 1080p 30fps. It also has parking mode that works. Doesn't have a battery, it's capacitor based.

The Sony IMX322 sensor though being a 2MP sensor, performs better in low light due to the larger pixel size available in comparison to say a 4MP OV4689 sensor.

Capacitor based dash cams are safer they do not use lipo batteries, which can go bad, puff up and even explode or lead to fire. Plus the capacitor based cams can also work at higher temperatures and be left in the car without any worries.

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw...-7950&_sacat=0

https://www.amazon.com/Lukas-Lk-7950.../dp/B00UYHP1SK

For the front

1) Street guardian SG9665GC -On first glance this looks exactly like the much cheaper A118C & A119 but the internals are different. This also sports the Sony IMX322 sensor and a metal mount for the lens. Amongst the best when it comes to video quality at night. Capacitor based too. Reliable camera and excellent after sales support.

https://www.amazon.com/Street-Guardi.../dp/B00U0OJMYG

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Street-Guard...P/222102599034

Got mine through a friend traveling back from Australia.

2) A119 - This model has just been released by the original manufacturer of the A118C series. Uses an upgraded chipset than the A118C along with the OV4689 sensor. Going by the reliability of the A118 series, there shouldn't be a problem on the hardware front.

They are also planning to come out with the A119s that'll have the IMX322 sensor but it is still in development.

http://www.foxoffer.com/car-dash-cam...a-car-dvr.html

http://www.ebay.com/itm/311652499649

3) Ausdom A261 - Again the same 4MP OV4689 sensor with the Ambarella A7 chipset but better video quality day or night than the Mini series.

http://www.gearbest.com/car-dvr/pp_232448.html

https://www.amazon.com/AUSDOM-A261-G.../dp/B00X5IH2X2

4) DDpai M6 Plus - New model with very good day and night video quality as per reviews.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DDPAI-M6-Plu...-/282015294735

5) Mini 0805 - The most reliable of the mini series but still not reliable enough. Has good video quality during the day and acceptable quality at night. OV4689 sensor + battery based.

There are newer models of the Mini available but the 0805 has been reported to be the most reliable of the lot.

There's one (Mini 0807) with the IMX322 sensor + capacitor but is still a disaster due to out of focus issues amongst other problems.

http://www.gearbest.com/car-dvr/pp_113549.html

I have had one Mini 0805 die due to a faulty power source, the replacement started acting up after connecting it to a HDMI port but after sitting in the cupboard for a month or so it has magically sprung back to normal life.

Since then I've mounted it back in the car and is working without any issues. I still think they are not reliable and if it acts up again, it's going in the bin.

For the back

1) Either of the ones you choose for the front can be used at the back too. Just get 2 pieces. Preferably one with the Sony sensor for the back.

2) Mobius 1 - Small and discreet camera without a screen or any bells and whistles. Solid reliability and performance. Also used as an action cam. Works well for rear installs due to various mounting options and is its size. Good video quality during the day and night.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mobius-Actio...-/161577541220

http://www.banggood.com/Mobius-New-V...-p-985644.html

I got mine from Banggood, it's still in transit. They are the only ones with all the other accessories available in one place.

Action cam + dash cam -

GitUp Git2 - This one has good night-time quality for a 16MP Sony sensor.

Does 1080p 60fps but drop to 30fps under low light conditions.

http://www.banggood.com/GitUp-Git2-2...p-1007770.html

http://www.aliexpress.com/af/git2.ht...earchText=git2

For night-time you need to keep in mind that no dash cam will capture what can't be seen due to poor lighting, especially for the rear.

Do also keep in mind how you want to mount it, is a suction cup preferable over a taped mount or vice versa.

Also do check your options on multiple websites and also check out reviews + user videos that include day and night footage before you decide.

Yes, major out of focus and focus shift issues reported. Doesn't do well in hot climate at all because it has a plastic lens mount that warps in the heat and the focus shifts.

If that's the form factor you want, look for one with the Ambarella A7 chipset + OV4689 sensor.

I just bought a similar product made by DOD - but it's much more expensive and mine does not have any backup camera facility. (Haven't used it yet, as experimenting with another dashcam which is pretty good)

Not sure how the quoted/gearbest one works as far as the backup camera facility goes - would be interested in the technical aspects - as there appears to only be a front-facing camera at one side (see on the left (front) side) of the rear-view mirror clip-on product.

This is the whole package.

The backup camera looks to be basic. I might replace that with something better if needed.

Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

Also, check the Video File Format. There are still some cams which record in AVI format. An AVI can be almost double the size of an MOV file for the same Duration and Resolution which will cut the Recording Hours . I guess MPEG4 is the best. (Correct me, if i'm wrong.)
