Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

Dear bhpians,
For the purpose of safety I would like to install dashcam front and rear (single system).
However I am confused about which dashcam to buy.
I need fairly basic dashcam front and rear.
To be powered using wire tap.
Not very particular about video quality or audio quality.
Audio recording itself is necessary or not I am not entirely sure.
Should be able to clearly record registration number of the other vehicles.
Durable and reliable model is needed (I don't want fiddle with the setup again and again)
Motion sensing feature is not a must but it has its uses I guess.
I need a Toyota Innova of dashcam, I don't want to go wrong in this.(Innova is no basic car but it's not a Lexus either)

Please suggest some good ones.

Got my viofo 119 fitted to my i20. So far so good. Contrary to what many have mentioned, the audio quality is really good. Conversations over Bluetooth get recorded with crystal clear quality. Also number plates can be read easily at night. Hope the camera lasts at least a year. Fingers crossed.

Hey Turbopetrol,

I am absolutely sure, you might be aware of this option but probably its not clicking to you at this moment.
If your dashcam came in with a very long power cable to draw power from lighter port, have you tried this.. (Image courtesy .. Aliexpress )

.....
I have been using the same dashcam for 6 months or so now. A quick overview :
Pros :
  • No battery, has two connecting wires, one of which needs a constant input. The other is connected to a acc-on fuse under the dashboard. The other wire also gets an in-line fuse.
  • Decent video quality. Claims to have a Sony IMX322 chip onboard.
  • Auto start-stop with ignition on-off.
  • Wifi enabled. Works fine with FinalCam and FN Cam Android Apps.
  • Has a video out option for head units that support video-in.
  • Built-in G-sensor which locks the video when triggered.
Cons :
  • Does not have an inbuilt display.
  • The absence of a battery means that you will have to turn acc-on inorder to access or transfer the dash cam / videos. I prefer using a OTG card reader as it is faster and easier.
  • Wifi file transfer is slow. Can take a couple of minutes for a 1 minute 1080p video ~ 100mb.
  • Occasional glare from the dashboard. The seller does not have a CPL filter for the particular model.
  • Night recording is pathetic.
  • The G-sensor is very responsive. I have kept this permanently disabled via the app. Used to get triggered every time someone closed the front doors a bit hard.
Overall a decent dash cam for under 2k INR. Got it for USD 31 including shipping. Did not have to pay any customs duty.

Yes, I guess this should be the way to go! Currently watching some YouTube videos on how to effectively hide the wire using this method. Thanks again.

Re: The Dashcam / Car Video Recorder (DVR) Thread

Connected my viofo a119 v2 and have used it for a few days with the CPL filter. I find a funny dark tinge on both bottom corners of the video. Is this related to the CPL filter. I'll try recording one without it and seeing. Here's a sample

Yes this happens with CPL filters - noticed the same with the CPL filter on my DSLR at the extreme lower end of the zoom range. More so when you stack filters (CPL on top of UV).

In the current position the camera is metering mostly off the sky and darkening the image. Lower the lens a little so there's a bit of the dash and bonnet within the FOV. It'll expose better and having a bit of the car's front within the FOV provides much needed perspective in case of an incident.

Do you all remove the camera before giving the vehicle for a service? For models that use 3M sticky pad for fixing, do you just leave the camera in the car or you remove it and fix it later with another pad? Most of the well known models here come with the 3M sticker and not suction holder.

This is where the Viofo does the job for me. It has a separate detachable GPS module which sticks to the glass. The camera is mounted onto the unit and you can take it out whenever you want. One of the reasons why I bought the Viofo.

I do the same as Pancham does !
The GPS unit is small , inconspicuous and behind the IRVM so there's 99% chance that it isn't noticed by anyone at all, if someone is not specifically looking for the same.

Installed SJCAM4000 WIFI dashcam. Ordered it on Amazon.in Link Got it installed it at a car electronics shop (Link) Satisfied with the performance so far. Bought SD card (Link) and card reader as well (Link) Many thanks to all the posters here for the wealth of information here on dashcams.

I have the rexing dash cam which comes with a detachable body. The base plate is attached to the windshield while I remove the camera before giving for service. But this I do very rarely as most of the times I give my car to FNG and I will be present almost all of the duration of the service.
