Are damping sheets flammable?

It is flammable. But it becomes a fire risk when under the hood for obvious reasons. I saw a YT video to this effect.

My Polo TDI has it.

My guess was always that one has the extra damping on diesel cars due to the noisier engines

Re: The Damping Material and Sound Deadener Thread

I'm interested in getting some damping done in my doors but I just wanted to check with the experts if these sheets trap moisture and increase rusting ? I'm anyways in a rust prone area (Mumbai Coast) and don't want to take a risk.

What about damping the space between the door flap and the hollows of the door rather going right in and possibly trapping moisture on the outer part of the door? It should have enough damping effect.

Re: The Damping Material and Sound Deadener Thread

Pioneer has now launched damping in India as well. This should be available easily.

https://pioneer-india.in/buy/car-ent...r-accessories/

There's also a local company called Paramat that should be available easily.

Re: The Damping Material and Sound Deadener Thread

Hello Everyone!

I could not find a dedicated thread, so posting here.

I am posting this query for a friend's car, not purely for sound deadening, but also for Heat Shielding/Insulation. Before I start, do pardon my lack of knowledge regarding the subject and topic; I have only been reading/researching regarding Damping/Sound deadening/Heat insulation over the past few weeks. Also, I may not have used the correct technical terms, please feel free to correct me wherever I am mistaken or my understanding is incorrect/inadequate.

Car: Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS Sportz AT (AMT) 2021 model year
Colour: Aqua Teal
Location: Predominantly driven in South Indian States (KA/KL/TN)

As it is currently one of the hottest summers in India, Air Conditioning has become our best friend. The problem is sometimes, the car's AC is not up to the mark or the heat of the Sun is much more than the AC can handle.

For the current summer of 2024, initially, we assumed it could be combated with sun film, so we installed Garware Icecool Shield on all the windows (windshield + all 4 doors + hatch glass). While it has stopped the ingress of heat via the glass area; we encountered the radiation of heat from the roof. I am quite tall and my head is quite near to the roof, maybe 2-3 inches away, can feel the heat.

We are already aware of the wafer-thin roof that Hyundai provides, as during the rainy season, one feels they are under sheet roofing used in Kaccha homes or Industries. So looking for both Sound Deadening and Heat Insulation

I did read maybe 50% of the thread and watched quite a few YouTube videos.

An Example,

My questions are:

1. Which of the below options is ideal in this scenario?
A. i-Copper i-D5 Ultimate Soundproof mat
https://www.motorogue.in/i-copper-i-...proof-mat.html
This is a 3-in-1 product having Aluminium + Butyl + Foam, a total of 7mm thickness in the space between the car roof and the roof trim.

B. Blaupunkt Damp 3.0 2mm Damping Sheets & Blaupunkt Door Pad Vibration Arrester DPVA 2.0 Door Pad Vibration Arrester
(My best guess is https://amzn.in/d/7cOEydA + https://amzn.in/d/3leQyMA)
The way mentioned in the video, to use a sound-deadening mat first, followed by a closed-cell foam layer. I am not sure regarding the thickness of the foam layer.

C. Using the materials used in the following thread by BHPian dipdawiz.
https://www.team-bhp.com/news/diy-do...-sound-quality
I feel that the Nitrile Tape used in this will not suit in my use case senario

D. Forget everything and get the roof wrapped in a shade of silver that matches the car.

E. What D-BHPian Leoshashi did, using Vibrofiltr Damping sheets and DrArtex Baffle Plus foam. https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/test-...ml#post5199253
While I would really like to go this route, the price beyond the budget we had in mind at present.
My best guess is to do option A, despite it being the slightly pricier option, but I am not sure about the application over the roof beams.

Also, we plan to do this as a DIY, as most shops charge around Rs.20,000/- just for the roof. Maybe post this experience, may dampen the 4 doors + hatch at a later stage. Any inputs/tips/videos on removing the roof trim from the roof would be helpful. My understanding is not to apply the dampening sheet all over the roof, just in patches, and to avoid the roof beams; the foam material can be applied all over.

Thank you in advance, and will update this thread based on the decision taken and our experience with the product, pre- and post- application.

PS. Going through the thread, the prices of Dampening sheets went up post covid.

Re: The Damping Material and Sound Deadener Thread

Guys, I want to get the boot of my Vento TSi damped and replace the under-hood insulation (which has been partially gnawed off by a rat). I don't need an audio-installation level damping, I just want to reduce outside noises such as honking which make their way in through the boot.

The car is much better in this aspect when the boot is full of things. I usually push them up against the rear seat and recently when moving them around realized that this acts as a form of damping.

I would do it myself, it should be just a matter of getting a sound-deadening mat (even a couple of regular yoga mats or a thick quilt would do) and attaching it to the rear firewall-like thing, but I'm also open to exploring getting this done by a car accessory shop if it can be done for around ~5-7k INR. Any suggestions?

Re: The Damping Material and Sound Deadener Thread

I have my Ford Endeavour 3.2 engine bay with a audio level 10 mm sound deadening sheet.

Quite a substantial difference of sound and vibrations. Is it flammable? I am sure it is, but then so was the thin thermocol sheet that was there originally also. At least this audio level sheet is far more spark resistant than the original sheet.

I have driven more than 7500 kms after this and it has worked for the purpose that it had been done.

The vibration is also less considering it is a 5 cylinder 3.2 level engine.

Cheers

Re: The Damping Material and Sound Deadener Thread

Dear all,

I have Exter SX AMT (clocked 24000 km in 15 months). Well, everything else is great about this car (within the segment) but one thing which now I have realized that it has poor underbody/wheel arch insulation. This creates a lot of road/tyre noise.

Please enlighten me about 'Damping'.

Would the door damping solve any purpose ? Single or double layer ?

Should I go for floor and wheel arches damping also because here in Jaipur, many shops are doing doors but no one is agreeing for floor / wheel arches damping.

Any other solution ?

Thanks in advance.

Re: The Damping Material and Sound Deadener Thread

Hey folks,

After a lot of research (primarily Team BHP threads, YouTube videos and Insta reels), I finally decided to take the plunge and get sound dampening materials installed in my Kia Seltos Gtx+. After the primary digital research, I headed off to the stores ( Accessories wale..) to get a feel and have a candid conversation with the technician/ supplier on what works best.

Why?

Because stock sound is 2000 (Well 200 was also an amazing year for DIY setups etc..). Jokes included; I wasn't too happy with the NVH ratio of the stock car. I could hear conversations happening outside the car at traffic signals. Lol!. Second, the OEM Bose speakers were not operating to their true potential. Having experienced a Burmeister setup in my GLC 200 previously (overseas), I wanted to set something close to that feel!

The Shortlist: Material and Man

I physically inspected :
  1. Morels
  2. Blaupunkt
  3. Nakamichi
  4. Dr Artex
  5. Rainbow
  6. Pioneer

I intended to get a double layer (inside door level 2 and outside level 1). So instead of going in for extra thick (2.1mm+) I opted for 2 mm ones. It would be a good trade off for price vs layering.

I zeroed down on Blaupunkt.

Then i shopped around the Whitefield area for a few installers based on their availability and expertise of installation. After doing online and offline recon, I went with Car Zone, in Whitefield -Siddapura area. Google Maps

There's a reason why he has 5 star rating even with 100 reviews ( not a lot, but hard to maintain after a stat sig count).

Mr Ashwini (owner) was patient in explaining the process and was prompt to get the material ordered and the work started promptly. His techician, let's call him 'Ustaad' was in his zone! We was a machine, placing and layering the mats meticulously, and using every cm cut and placing it where needed. Pics or it didn't happen!

The Outcome:

So amazing, so demure, the sound was just sounding like a wow! (ok that was cheap)...

The NVH has improved considerably. The quietness in the cabin is top notch. The music sounds full. I had to tune down the equalizer settings, specially the bass and mid. The notes, are crisper and I had a whole list of Sound testing tracks on Spotify, that I sampled. I could hear beats and snares that I usually listen only on my Sony Headphones Sony WH 1000 XM4.

The fidelity reproduction has increased due to dampening.

Ok, I rest my case. Really enjoyed the overall installation process. Both man and material.

PS: I also installed the Thinkware U1000 4K Dash cam front and 2K back. More on that later!

Great damping by team. Why you did not go for Dr Artex, because I am planning on it.

Completely agree with you sir I had my seltos damped with Pioneer damping sheets with thickness of 2.2 mm and has done 2 layers. overall NVH has improved a lot and music sounds richer and bass is tight. totally enjoying the quiet cabin compared to stock
