Thanks,
The Wike pages provide a wealth of information. Sometimes maybe a bit overwhelming.

This is a good site too http://www.kowoma.de/en/gps/index.htm

I find it is well written and is somewhat more easily comprehensible. It's a pretty accurate, although not always entirely up to date. (especially the bit about how GPS calculates speed)

It does, but only the first time you switch it on in a different region. Here's what happens:

Hope this helps

Hey Jeroen,

Can't thank you enough for the detailed explanation. Frankly speaking, I had no idea about all this. I just had the AGPS concept, that too just elementary.
Thanks a ton for the above.

Saket

This news is Ouch! for people who have so far paid for Sygic App on Android.

Just got an e-mail that 2013.30 has been released

Downloading smoothly, but very slowly. I am sitting on a 2Gbps pipe but am barely getting 175kbps since the update is hosted on the Taiwan site, which is very slow.

Thanks for the information. To date, I haven't received a single communication from Garmin though my 50LM is duly registered with them.

I updated the maps of my Garmin 50LM to the latest version this morning. First, I downloaded the 750 MB file from http://www.garmin.co.in/mapupdate/ . Thereafter, I ran the downloaded .exe file AS ADMINISTRATOR and the update proceeded smoothly.

But before downloading the update, my.garmin.com had informed me “No updates available”. This site also did not identify my existing map version correctly.

Prior to the update, my 50LM had 1.28 GB of used space (out of total internal memory of 1.76 GB). After the update, the used space increased to 1.45 GB.

@debuda; I find that the synch between the India and US sites with Taiwan thrown in is not that great. I have has no such issues. I got by 265WT in April 2010 and then added the 2465LM later. By the posts here it seems that they ar sending out the e-mails in batches.

Assuming these guys are not philanthropist's how do they make money? A business model with only cost and no revenue usually doesn't last very long.
Any thoughts?

I had bought Sygic navigation for my Note 2 for about Rs1250 and found the entire navigation search engine and user interface hopeless,
it doesn't even give u suggestive / predictive texts while typing and hence u need to type the word accurately otherwise u will get an error wrong spelling!
it even has search in google but it never worked always gave connection error even though my phone was receiving around 5mbps data speed
even the latest updates have not solved this issue

so most of the time I depend on google navigation .

I bought Sygic only because I saw Map My India associated with it .

I regret it .

no wonder they are giving for free .. useless

I am looking to buy GPS navigator, the choice is between Garmin and MMI for a price band of 8to12K. Garmin hardware seems to be better than MMI, whereas the maps from MMI are better per reviews.
Has anyone installed MMI maps for Garmin units such as 50LM, 40LM 42Lm etc? I dont see these units mentioned as part of the compatibility mentioned in the below link.

Garmin has updated the entire map range across its models recently. Better now.
Am using both MMI and Garmin. Garmin QUALITY beats MMI Chinese units anytime!

For hardware there is not comparison. I think the only point compare is Garmin Maps vs MMI. How does Garmin far there.

@SG,

Does Garmin allow purchase of maps alone for Garmin devices bought outside India?

I have the same question, as I have a 40LM which I purchased in US during my stay there. I tried following Jereon's suggestions of installing Open street maps on 40 LM with not much success.

Any details for me will be highly appreciated.:D

Garmin should allow you to purchase their maps alternatively you may also go for MMI maps as they are no. 1 in the map details and fast in upgrading too.

You may either purchase the Garmin India maps or the MMI maps. MMI maps comes in micro SD card and you just need to insert it into your Garmin device and select the same from the menu.

No question on the Garmin quality, it beats everybody hands down both in terms of the interface and the hardware. I havent checked the updated Garmin maps, I am quite happy with MMI.

Any details on why you could not get it to work. There is a very active forum associated with Open street maps and they have dedicated sections on Garmin.
