My feedback is positive. It is much better than the previous version. And secondly the upgrade is not very costly. Just INR 1000/-.

On another note, I notice you needed to connect the road pilot to the PC to install the upgrade. Does it not have a removable SD Card like the MMI BX200?
The latest devices from MMI, I don't think have a removable SD Card. The device which I have, needs to be connected to the PC using the USB cable. And what I noticed is that MMI is also now asking customers to download the new versions to their PCs and then move the contents to the device. Earlier they used to send SD cards which we could just put into the device.

Tried the map update to version 9 on my trip to Goa. I was on version 6 earlier. The device response seems to be a little faster with the new update.

Even after updating to the latest map, I was directed to a one way (the one way board was too high to be noticed) right next to busy M.G road. A skoda octavia almost hit me at the exit and had a tough time getting out. After re-routing came to the same road and realized that I should have taken the next right after the one directed by the GPS. I do not understand how they can miss a one way road in the middle of the city on a map which was released very recently. Maybe, the road was converted to one way after the map was released.

Even with the fastest route option, the GPS directed me to internal road unnecessary. For e.g. I missed the exit from NH64 to NH4 as I had set hubli circle as a via route. Stopped the car and set the option "Take Me Home". Instead of just directing me back on the same road towards the exit, the GPS took me to the internal roads unnecessarily and then to the road towards the exit.

It is safer to rely on multiple devices. Though mapmyindia serves most of the time, it cannot be relied on completely. The GPS was a lifesaver for me for finding places within Goa, though it has an affinity towards narrow internal roads.

How come you paid Rs.1000 ? I paid Rs.500 for single update last week.

Thrissur round (the central part of the town/city) has been a one way road for time immemorial (at least 25 years). But Map My India would ask you to take this circular road, towards the wrong direction .

As I mentioned earlier, I had plotted a good route map to cover the Attibele->Rayakottai->Palacode->Dharmapuri NH7 Jn route. Yesterday was the day to try out this on the ground. I would consider MMI (and myself) scored around 85%. The reason being MMI acted too smart (once again). I had marked one junction (where road from TVS factory meets the road coming from Thally - near Hosur town). The next point was Rayakottai. In Google Maps the route between this two points is straight forward. MapMyIndia was smarter. Between these two points it had identified a shorter route (going through Hosur Railway station, Hosur town suburbs and then onto a state highway).

Minor confusion once again, as I went forward on the route which I felt was right. Then got a bit worried, made a U turn and then finally took the route which MMI suggested. All the while I was tensed whether this also would be a repeat of the the Uthukuli->Thiruppur experience. It was pitch dark and I was really feeling worried. There was also another car which was trailing mine as part of a convoy. It would be again a matter of shame if I once again take my relatives on a wrong direction :(. I only got into a normal state of mind as I found the GPS finally take me to Rayakkottai town. This regained my confidence in the whole device. From then on there was no confusion, and by 0630Hours odd we reached the final point which I had plotted.

Lesson learnt: There is still scope for improvement here. Ideally to make MapMyIndia take your trusted route, you need to pretty much plot (and save) every single junction/intersection on the road. If MMI finds another route between two points (how ever close they are), it would act double smart and take you through that route.

Perhaps they have slashed the prices. And this version is much much faster than previous versions.

That's welcome.

May have escaped the attention of the MMI Surveyor who visited these parts in the making of the MMI map.

Possible. But unlikely. A lot more people may have been making the same mistake, if it was a recent change - MMI or no MMI. And there would have been cops to fine the transgressors. Since no mention, of either, I am assuming this is not a recent change.

But all , in all it does sound good. I am thinking of getting the upgrade before my next Delhi Kolkata run in December.

Re: MapMyIndia Navigation - Review

Need a help. I have a In Dash AVN with MMI installed. Today I noticed that the MMI micro sd card is missing. Not sure if I removed for something or somebody removed it during car service/cleaning.

Question is: How do I purchase a duplicate? The website only seems to have an option to buy updates.

Neither of them. Map My India does not rely on any mobile network. If you notice even Assisted GPS (A-GPS) is depedent on mobile networks. Map My India devices directly connect with around 6-7 satellelites to take the position bearings. The maps are all stored locally on the device. And the position then gets plotted on these maps. Because of this Map My India devices generally would NOT work indoors or inside basement parkings - where satellites cannot be reached.

I don't think you would get a duplicate. That is because once you purchase the device Map My India does NOT keep track of any changes you make in the Maps. The routes which you save, the places you mark as favourites - all gets stored in your local Micro SD card. It does not get backed up to Map My India's repository. So better would be to use this chance to get the latest upgraded version .

Rajeev you need to contact customer service - if they can provide you this data current to the last version that you bought. An upgrade would need to be separately paid for. As Sachin mentioned the base maps, favorites etc are all stored on the SD card.
Going forward, always keep a backup of the SD card separately. That way even if you lose the SD card for whatever reason, you can always restore to a new one and not have to go back to customer service.

Checked with MMI Customer service today. The current version available is 9.0. The next version 9.1 will be available in December. Guess I will wait for 9.1.
Prices have been slashed - the single update is now at Rs 500/-

My advice is that unless you are a perpetual traveller, even an annual upgrade is more than enough. How often do roads in major areas change?

Thanks. I actually just want the full version again. No need for a duplicate of what I had. Trouble is in the website, it just has option to buy updates. I dont see an option to buy the SD card/download a full version.

Or is the update itself a complete package?

Thanks. Let me try that. Am also thinking whether to switch to some other maps. I have had several experiences where google maps were much more accurate than MMI MMI did not have coverage of several of Bangalore's arterial roads (which have been there for a long time). But I assume any other maps will also have the same issue.

Please double check with them. Upgrade may NOT work. Because when you go for upgrade you are just replacing a few files/folders in your existing SD Card. For you it is not possible because you have lost your SD card. So you need to check if they can just ship you a brand new Micro SD card (with latest version), and NOT the entire device once again.

I may just keep Google Maps as a backup. I am not very keen on mixing up the phone and navigation device. Google Maps only work with cell phone coverage. Some tools also allow you to download google maps (state wise), but I feel the phone battery backup is not that great. So Google Maps remain my Plan B option .

Planned to buy the annual upgrade only prof. My last upgrade was in December 2013. That time was given version 8.1

It's another matter MMI releases 2 versions each year.

Not the road itself. Especially in urban areas, what invariably happens is that the traffic arrangements change.

In Gurgaon for example, one of the Sector roads linking Golf Course road and HUDA City Center Metro which used to be One-way only going toward HUDA City Center station , has now been converted to do the reverse.

In Kolkata, if one is planning on driving through the center of town , one needs to have these one-way arrangements committed to memory or have someone in the car who knows.
The area roughly bounded by Strand Road (on the East), Mahatma Gandhi Road (North), AJC Bose Road (West & South) is full of major and minor roads/lanes many of which are one-way roads. And this pattern keeps undergoing minor changes over the months.

Not that MMI is always right about one-ways, but it does help as the latest map version is a close approximation of reality.

For someone who does not visit such areas that very often , it's difficult to keep up with the latest developments, or even keep track of such notifications when they do get published in the dailies.

Hence I recommend a map upgrade at least annually, if one keeps traveling to unknown parts of cities- at Rs 500/- a pop it's well worth the price especially if one considers the agony it avoids.

Agree, that is one reason why I wanted a proper Maps Solution. But some poor experiences have shaken my trust in it. I do not have an MMI device, I have a Blaupunkt 835 unit which came bundled with maps. Luckily I do have the Serial number and other details. So let me contact customer care and see what they say.

So any luck with the customer care? BTW, if you have trouble on the phone you may want to discuss in-person here.
