Re: Office commuting on my bicycle | 4000 kms in a year

A very inspiring story! Thank you for creating this thread, and I hope it reaches maximum number of people so that they start using bicycles regularly, especially for running errands, instead of using scooters/bikes.

As a doctor myself, I can confirm that regular exercise is very beneficial for health. Infact,
(I believe many people already know this) studies have shown that regular exercise(supported by medicines and healthy diet) can reverse conditions like Diabetes, Hypertension, PCOD, acne and certain other, in addition to acting as a protective factor for development of Heart Disease, Diabetes, Stroke.
That's the reason we always find doctors advising us to have a healthy diet and exercise regularly in addition to prescribing medications for the above-mentioned conditions.

I try to cycle regularly (5 days a week) for about 9-10kms a day. Although I take 5 mins breaks in between- I cycle in 3km loops around my house 3 times and take a 5min break after each loop. I am obese, so at the moment this is the max I can do.

I stay in a very calm area surrounded by trees, near the sea, so pollution and traffic is not an issue in my case.

I use a Hercules Roadeo 21 gear cycle.

Also, I prefer cycling for running errands in my area for distances upto 2-3 kms.
We have 2 cars, 2 scooters and a bike at home, and believe me, it gives immense satisfaction to leave those behind and take the cycle for such errands.

Went to meet a friend yesterday, 3 kms from home. Surprisingly enough, my friend too came by his cycle!

I want to conclude by saying:
Cycling is good for the environment, good for the pocket, and most importantly- good for health!

Replacing use of bikes/scooters by cycles for errands around a person's home can be quite beneficial for the individual and for the environment as well.

Re: Office commuting on my bicycle | 4000 kms in a year

Kudos! I don't know many people who commute every day of the week.

My commute ride in Bangalore is about 17 km one way, and I do it about 2 times a week. During the summer months, a trip to the shower with a change of clothes is non negotiable. But during cooler months I get by with regular office clothes and soft pedal a bit to avoid breaking sweat.

But the big gotcha was on riding wet roads. Muddy slush invariably landed on my clothes!

Mudguards are a *must* for a commuter!

Pic after a post-muddy-ride-wash!

While cycling as a whole is indeed healthy practice, cycling through the normal pollution infested roads isn't! The air quality has degraded significantly now and poses huge risks to our health in general. Cancers, breathing issues, skin irritation and what not.

Unfortunately there isn't anything one can do to tackle this menace, other than taking your car for daily use.

[quote=vinya_jag;5523222]Lovely. Electric assist, I never thought of. Is it heavy? Can we go across medians?

It's actually an amazing piece of technology. It has 3 levels. Low, medium and high. When you switch it on, it gives you an additional torque during pedaling. With pedal assist, you don't need gears at all. I use it extensively .
