I don't think Solid axle restricts the speed in anyways. I easily do 140 kmph in my gypsy with solid axles.

With little modification @ cost of 3k you can add extra shock to each tyre to do 90 degree left or right turn @70 kmph+. This modification will not be possible with IFS.

I don't think that Thar can be categorized as fast vehicle because the weight & shape of Thar will always be the negative factor with simple science
the momentum (p) = m(mass) x v (velocity)

So it will very difficult in terms of breaking & turning at high speeds because of the momentum gained at high speeds.

I am not sure how many of would like to take chances in soft top at high speed when there always be surprises on Indian Highways.

Because of this high momentum their will be more wear & tear even at small potholes/humps as compared to lighter vehicle.

These people arrange for registration based on affidavit from you that you also have a residence/business in that RTO's jurisdiction.

Sadly it is a possibility. For as low as 200Rs one can walk into any sub-registrar office in bangalore and get a agent to create a 'affidavit' to show you reside in so-and-so area since so-many-years and this is your-permanent-address and this document becomes a-valid-govt-address-proof...!!

While this may be a nice info for all wannabe Mdi-4x4 owners, this fradulent process is used by all the anti-social elements to create valid documents..!!

Re: Mahindra Thar Launch on 21st December 2010. Update: Price on Page 2!

@arka: I thought that you were one of the gurus!! Anyways, thanks a ton! My questions were not properly put but still you some how gave me what I wanted.

@Crazy4Power/Arka:
What I meant by my first question was about cornering at high speeds and not high speed on different suspensions! My bad!! Will be specific from here on.

OT: I currently own a Safari 4x4 as it suited my requirements of long drive/driving through some trails, I have this itch for off roading too. But since my wife uses the safari, my case is put to rest: I can't take it anywhere.
Initially I thought about buying the Thar Crde and sell the safari as it would help in both off roading/long drives, but I have my own doubts on the long drives part (Some times I tend to do around 1300+ kms per day). I will surely take a TD before coming to a conclusion. and if I want to be frequent on off road (I don't know how I'd do that though), I would rather settle for an off roader which is cheaper for me to maintain and easily fixable by any garage chap. So for me the thar seems to be out making way to a Gypsy I guess. Will take a while to get the vit m + the second hand prices to go down before I buy one .

Thanks,
Tejas

Tejas the Thar is not designed to do 1300+ kms of highway driving per day. The seat comfort etc will just not match upto the Safari 4X4 that you have though it will easily be a better of roader. The Thar may not suit you even if within budget is you are looking for a combo vehicle. Seem Ok for upto 400-500 kms in a day.

Actually 1300kms - do you drive 24 hrs? on those trips?

Check out my Jeep, it has the same eye sore. It is not really because of cost-cutting.
But the hubs on the Thar do NOT look like they have to be manually locked / unlocked. Aren't they the auto-locking / unlocking type? If yes, why can't they have the hub caps on them like the Scorpio / Safari?

Mahindra trying to save 400 bucks and upping the 'cool' factor?

ACM:
Not really, I tend to drive for max 18 hrs. Off the 18hrs, my wife drives for a 3-4 hrs. The exception was recently when my wife fell sick in the journey and I drove from ahemdabad to Rani bennur in around 17.5 hrs, which got me thinking if I could do the same in thar. But we have been in situations when we have driven for quite a while just because of bad planning!
