Re: Our Marshal DI 4x4 NGCS

Hi, great thread.

I have been considering purchasing a Marshal and upgrading it.

What all upgrades shall be possible - engine, suspension, electricals etc?

More importantly, I have three options near by - one is 2002 and the other two are 2005. However, all of the are 2wd. I read on the thread that taxis are routinely converting between 2x4 and 4x4, and I would like a 4x4. So if I purchase a 2wd model, would it be easy/possible to convert it to 4wd?

Super, keep them pictures coming.

How about changing the entire engine and drive train to camper / pikup 4x4? Some grey metallic paint and should be good to go. Keep it looking as original as possible please.

Have thought of something similar. Xylo mEagle, BA10, BW, PS, front disc brakes et all. Waiting for the TO and RR post which will start work.

Just make sure that the axles can take the power of MEagle / NEF CRDe series engines. The older axles will break, those engines used to come with only 55-70 bhp power.

Also turbo charging, fip replacement and intercooler addition remains a second option to the mdi3200.

Re: Our Marshal DI 4x4 NGCS

Hello all ..
This thread is the reason why I bought a Marshal . Found a 2000 Marshal 2000 DI in pretty neat condition. Now I need help with upgrading it. Kindly let me know where can I go for best quality work. I am ready to take it almost anywhere in India for that.
I don't need top speed, hence for now I am not looking for an engine upgrade and would like to keep its present engine, the MDI 3200.

Here is what I need -
1. 2wd to 4wd conversion. Would this also mean 5+1 gears instead of 4+1? I would like a 5+1 gear setup. Please discuss pros/cons of 4+1 vs 5+1 (along with 4x4) if that option is there.
2. AC, PS
3. Thinking to upgrade to the complete shocker kit from ARC. Your thoughts?
4. Some other minor things like day/night rear view mirror, Camera.

Please help. TIA.

Re: Our Marshal DI 4x4 NGCS

Had been meaning for awhile to post these pics:

A (slightly crazy?) mid-winter's trip on the occasion of our 10th wedding anniversary, out on the forest road ending at the site of Bijli Mahadev - which starts beyond Naggar/Jana and continues 30-odd km's to near the ridge-end high above Kullu.

In the midst of a mild winter hadn't expected this much snow / ice out there, and this was the first time doing it with a car (vs. bike) and with wife and kids along... Just lovely, though, and once again proved the old Marshal's worth - the car seems to have been made for this kind of thing.

Would have been downright mad to attempt this without 4x4, or with much less ground clearance. But with both these giving advantage, along with the Bridgestone Blizzaks, there was very little slippage at all... just chugged along for a few hours pretty effortlessly... even on steeper sections.

There are some pretty narrow patches here, with pretty high drop-offs... better to not look down!

A broken-down, abandoned-looking Gypsy nearly blocking the trail at one point in a deeply forested area did give a bit of pause...

But in the end got home safe and sound, and we'd all assess it was worth it.

Appears to be in very nice shape, indeed... the 4x4 conversion is a pretty easy one if you're sticking with the 4-speed and standard Dana/Spicer gear-driven transfer case. The chaindriven Borg-warner TC used in the Armada and others is quieter and allegedly less problematic (ours has been perfect), but had different splines on the input shaft, requiring that the Armada transmission mainshaft for the KMT-90 4-speed be sourced and changed out.

The 5-speed can be done and would be great, but I was told (unconfirmed) that the self-starter setup is different on the turbo DI vs. the older N/A, and that as such a custom bellhousing would be required... the one I saw offered in Mayapuri seemed to be of very dubious manufacture, honestly...

As I'm not doing rock-crawling or hard-core offroad, my inclination is to just swap out the original 4.27:1 gearsets out for the 3.73:1 front/rear differentials of the Bolero 4x4. A bit less torque, but better for highway use. This is assuming I can find second-hand units I can exchange mine / get some credit for. I'd bet there's some Bolero-owning 4x4 enthusiasts who might be willing. Along with a bit taller tyres, the 3.73's should make things more highway-tolerant even with the 4-speed. Ours can manage a GPS-indicated 95-100kmph tops as it is with 205-85-16's... which would be somewhat adequate speed-wise, if the engine wasn't screaming at full revs! A 3.73 may not up the top speed much as these are quite underpowered, but at least it won't be spinning as high.

Always thought this would be the perfect drivetrain for one of these. Still pretty basic/non-electronic (which is a plus) vs. the CRD stuff, with such wonderful torque / power-delivery.

Great to see some new Marshal projects coming up. I know of one other (mostly silent, but earlier posted here) Bhpian who had done his up nicely with PS, AC, a very nice interior with bucket seats and Bolero door panels, some nice 35" 9x16 NDMS and a tent platform atop (pics here earlier)... Has driven it to Ladakh, Spiti/Kinnaur and cross-country as well... Recently upgraded to the MDI turbo, and undergoing a repaint...

These are potentially great cars, and it seems about everytime we're on the verge of "upgrading" to a Scorpio or Safari or Xenon 4x4, someone comes along (in person) and tells me how great these old cars are, and of the pain and expense the new ones...

Still thinking of "upgrading" nonetheless...

But tempted to just forego it and do the upgrades others here have done or are planning... car is up for re-inspection later this year, and if they grant another 5-years, it seems a general refurb could be the sensible thing to do.

-Eric
