Exactly.
We had a 4x4 Sumo TCIC at disposal when we went to Manali last year. We were the guests of the Brigadier in charge there.
Was actually very nice and powerful, was brand new though. I couldnt get to drive it, one army man drove us all around.

Its the same engine that ur Safari has.
my aunt has one its white in colour and has wheel arch covers like the sierra
she is a doctor and its a her official vehicle which has a red light on the top

What if some smart criminals decide to pick up this Armoured Sumo 4x4 and fit it with some good rubber with "run flat" capability.... Now would this not be an excellent setup for a get away car!!!
There are reasons why vehicles designed for the Army are not available to civilians....

A 4x4 will not be a quicker get away vehicle
in the city unless you talk about a sludgy or marshy road, an offroad chase, the armoury will add to its weight and make it lethargic along with the 4x4(if engaged).
Armoury in india is a thicker sheet, which anyway can be built inhouse.

I guess THIS 4x4 will not be a quick vehicle..but there are others that are!!
those will be quicker, even without the 4x4 engaged.

Could this be the M Benz version the sumo was loosely based on.

dude.. its a TATA SUMO no MBZ vehicle... it has tata logos everywhr.. tata wheel caps.. tata sumo interior.. exact same but left hand drive.. i will try to get a pic in some days...

sorry for replying and updating late. here almost a year back.. in this case. but here are the pics of it.
Wow! LHD Sumo 4x4. Any idea if the wipers were changed or they have the same as in RHD? (Remember FIAT/Premier Padmini used to have the same for the Indian version as the LHD sold n Europe)
At one Auto Expo, dont remember exactly which one, Tata displayed Sumo 4 X 4. The Army bought a lot of 4 X 4 sumo from Tata.
There are a number of 4x4 Sumo variants.
Initially, during the days of the Sumo and Sumo DX, both with NA engines, a third variant called the Sumo 4x4 Turbo was launched. It had the same engine as the Sierra Turbo, and the electric chain drive TCase from the Safari. The vehicle was equipped with 205 section 15'' tyres.
Some time back another variant was added, the Sumo 4x4 SE. This has a 2.0 NA engine and 185 16'' tyres from the Spacio.
The army version, manufactured mostly as an ambulance has stiffer suspension, a 2.0 ltr TCIC engine and better GC thanks to 7.50-16 tyres.
All 4x4 Sumos have auto hublocks, which are slightly inferior to manual ones.

Michelin XZL tyres are verry difficult to aquire in 7.50R16 size even in the UK. All Indian Army vehicles using this tyre size are equipped with MRF Sandgrip, JK LT2000 etc.
The 2.0 TCIC engine is not very suitable for offroading as it lacks low end grunt. It is OK over surfaces where one can keep the engine at relatively high RPMs to keep the turbo spooled, but it is terrible for slow speed rock crawling and 'grinding'.
