Re: Mistakes while offroading: List them and Learn from them

Remembered something to include in my inventory, which must not be laughed at :-

- 250 gms of Fine Saw Dust (as fine as possible) in a plastic screwed cap container.
- 50 ml of Dishwasher / Liquid Soap in Plastic Bottle.

When your hands are messy with Oil and Grease, there is nothing better than a Spoon of moist Saw Dust with few drops of Liquid Soap added to it and you have the best Cleaning agent in your hand.

Separate stock of the same is separately maintained at home too. Give a try.

The Spanners from Junk Market are misfit for their actual sizes. The worn out Spanners are worked out by grinding their surfaces and give them a neat look. So they may work fine, not by their actual size as embossed on them, but by trying out what fits best.

Mother Earth does an amazing job..

Even touching ones hands on the ground and rubbing them together would reveal 70% results for a quick clean.

Use old paper [newspapers] to wipe dry

Re: Offroad Tools Thread

Though not a part of Off Road Tool Kit, an important piece in my collection.

Screw Extractor : Any broken bolt / stud or a bolt (Job) with damaged head can be removed with this. Drill a small hole upto reasonable depth in the centre of the screw (Job) to be extracted. Start inserting suitable extractor which will cut threads as it passes. However, the rotation of the extractor is reverse to the rotation of the job. Extractor is tapered and when it cannot sqeeze itself any further, the job starts rotating and in the process is removed.
I have used it successfully when all other means have failed.

Re: Offroad Tools Thread

Finally & finally got it in my local tools shop

The Nut Splitter / cracker .

This works on rusted nut bolts assemblies where the nut is seized on the bolt by rusting. simply hold the nut in the eye & thghten the tool's head bolt that will force the chisel like thing in to the nut & cause it to split & then taken out easily without damaging the threads of the bolt.

Not sure whether its OT but thought to share with everyone.
Have a condom in your toolbox, it helps to repair broken/leaked pipe (Diesel/brake). Due to elasticity, it helds pretty tight and prevent leakage.i have used it 2-3 times in the past to repair leaked brake pipe and it worked perfectly for even few days.
All you need to do is stretch it and tie it on pipe.

PS: it helps to prevent leak from pipe in between not from pipe joints.

Do you also have a convincing story that can be used in case the wife finds the condom in the Jeep toolbox?

DISCLAIMER - Before you think of this tool as an alternative, please read what the Yeti had to say -

EDIT- you can try to convince the wife, it is part of a survival kit for Jeepers- this perhaps would be the toughest obstacle in your offroading life.

You need to be convinced to convince someone

Its easy Samurai this side for me...With my frequent travel , leaving family behind, my wify would anytime have a 70mm smile and happy seeing my travel kit with the mentioned stuff as she and God only knows , how much that has helped us stop at the third child for the timebeing.

Mods: I am sure this is going wild and so please delete my post, if required.

As long as it serves the purpose everything is valid here .

No doubt you are a hardcore Jeeper that uses everything at his disposal, to be back home "safe"

Yes condoms have found their way into roadside repairs, from stopping leaks to making wiring joints waterproof .

Surgical hand gloves were being used to cover the distributor (ignition) since long.

Re: Offroad Tools Thread

Here to share the nut cracker working

It was quite a size of bolt 21-23 something . A good tightening torque is needed for this size.

Re: Offroad Tools Thread

What is the size of the wheel bearing locknut socket? My mechanic used a chisel and hammer to remove it and tighten it during hub greasing.

I bought a socket yesterday for Rs 150 and its written 52 on that.

Re: Offroad Tools Thread

I think that it is 32mm or less, as I have opened it up and I do not have > 32mm socket.

As far as I remember ( because have the spanners for long time & as I know which one in the kit fits where , have forgotten the size in mm )

But, the check nut spanner [rear FFRA ,front hub is 55 mm )

And the rear SFRA [old] was 36 mm ( I discarded the old SFRA long back, so need to find the Nut in the store)

But on the safer side take one nut with you & buy a piece . The 36 will be in socket & the 55 (or 52 whatever is there) will come in a box (pipe) fashion.

But always be respectful if you are using heavy spanners along with some " good " torque.... I have ripped off the fiat axle thread section from the axle once

P S , my Jeep & LR hub nuts share the same larger spanner shown above
