Easy, Fun, Cheap & Creative Mods for 4x4 vehicles

I like to do cheap easy fun things to my Jeep and Gypsy, I have seen a lot of others doing this kind of simple and useful mods, lets put all of our ideas on one thread. We all know about Suspension, Crawlers,Lockers, winches and many other things, but how about the little things, that are just creative. Like a Led cabin light, a small magnet to hold your toll ticket, anything small creative custom.

re: Easy, Fun, Cheap & Creative Mods for 4x4 vehicles

Great thread. My 2 paisa:

The cheapest ICE you can have. MP3 player (could be your smart phone, thus no cost), mobile phone holder (150 bucks), AUX cable (100 bucks), two old Pioneer speakers, a cheap amplifier and a custom made boom box (500 - 2000 bucks):

House mats double up as floor mats. This design is very easy to source in India, and is great for off-roading:

Stainless steel bars. Don't rust, convenient when getting in / out and look great:

Stainless steel bolts everywhere on the body. Spend a buck more initially, but save 10 down the line. These don't rust, unlike the cheap Mahindra bolts:

Shall cross post from my classic thread:

Mod 1: Half cover for open jeep:

2. Cutting according to size.
3. Final cut.
4. Stitching.
5. Final finish.
6. How it is secured to the body.
7. Need to get more of the brackets attached, so using a clip temporarily.
8. Rear View
9. ORVM velcro gaps

Mod 2: Fan installation:

Mod 3: Rear front facing seat with storage:

The side seats needed to be modified slightly and reduced in width.

Re: Easy, Fun, Cheap & Creative Mods for 4x4 vehicles

missed out 2 more...

8) Battery switch - life saver (battery drain ruled out) - 200Rs~ and a extra length of battery wire, the removable key can be attached to ignition key and be carried away. Kids cant play with lights, horn any more!

Easy, Fun, Cheap & Creative Mods for 4x4 vehicles-battery-switch.jpg

9) Horn switch - this was a fun mod, loved the way truckers honk without moving their palms far away from the wheel - this position is very ergonomic for right palm index+middle fingers (pic angle not correct) - no need to take hands off wheel in city traffic - 100~Rs for the switch. (no earth wire reqd since its mounted on metal frame)

Easy, Fun, Cheap & Creative Mods for 4x4 vehicles-hornswitch.jpg

10) Extended tank inlet (sorry no better pic to explain the point)

OE CJ's tank extends only till the body line making it very difficult for jerry can mouth to reach it and causing spills. This is a small tinkers job of extending it a bit 2-3 inches so that emergency refills will be easier.

Re: Easy, Fun, Cheap & Creative Mods for 4x4 vehicles

Another simple and useful mod which i had done for both my old gypsy and classic was to install a motorcycle side box (an example pictured below) on the inside of the tail gate. Serves as a tool box / storage box and is completely weather proof as well. Unfortunately i don't have any pics of the install.

Re: Easy, Fun, Cheap & Creative Mods for 4x4 vehicles

Here are two more:

Master cut-off switch (used in in Army Jeeps). Cost is ~1,000 bucks. Hide it behind the dashboard and you got yourself an anti-theft device:

A walkie-talkie . Must-have accessory when off-roading or touring in a group:

^^^ GTO - I thought Walky Talkies are not legal in India, to use without a license. Am I off the mark here?

Solution for Rattling door pads:

For rattling door pads, a cheap solution:

Get this lining sheet that is used below carpets (like in offices). It costs about Rs 50/- per meter (width 52"). Thickness - 6mm for this black sheet. White sheets are available in 8mm, @ Rs 60/- per meter.

Stick it full - also helps to prevent water on the inside of the door pads.

Banana connectors, its very useful in a off road Jeep are gypsy, can be used for connecting a work light for emergency break downs in night. you can connect a searchlight to find the trial.

Advantage is you can use a direct wire are you can use a plug, Available easily in all AV stores.

MP Srinivas CJ with winch cable tie down, we can use this for keeping winch cable warping around the two pipes when it required for next obstacle, no need to roll it back to the spool.
