Hi Siddhartha,

Sometimes I feel that too many recce's make the competitors dull, since its with the O-Team; newbies are put through the basics of Driving, the Oldies cannot really pull-off some "Faster" moves, and hence they cannot really try out new-moves.

On the other hand First-Timers to TPC; face a do or die situation and are more innovative with gearing, acceleration and choosing the lines.

A Few Basic Tips (from my experience)

1) Deflate the tyres (20psi Radials/15psi Cross-Ply)

2) Hear the engine and co-relate to the actual speed. If you are stepping on it and the vehicle is not moving any faster, ease off the accelerator, at least the engine does not heat up the engine.

3) On descends use 2nd Low instead of 1st Low , in sand the wheels make a track which keeps the vehicle steady.

4) Never accelerate while descending, step on it as the rear wheels come on to flat ground.

5) Don't floor the throttle, keep pumping it, varying the engine speed, this way the Fly-Wheel Momentum is not lost.

6) Use the Terrain
i) use small DOWN hump/bump to slow you down before shifting to Higher gear.
ii) use small UP /bump to slow you down before shifting to Lower gear.
iii) Rev up the engine another 500-1000Rpm and then press the clutch and shift gears.
iv) DO NOT Ride the Clutch or Half-Clutch.

7) Team Based
i) Be Strategic think about the entire days Special Stages (SS) and not putting on your thinking caps at each Special Stage.

ii) Have a designated spotter/navigator.

iii) OBSTACLE COURSE RULES - Never hurry up at the obstacle (SS) cover time between Obstacles (SS).

9) Have Vinod Nookala in your Team (TPC 08/TPC09)

10)Beat The Heat

11) Vehicle Preparations

Regards,

Arka

PS - Competitors, Vinod, Vikram, Sanjay, Sean and others please add your Tips & Tricks.

Entry Point

All preparations done and off we go towards the entry point, at the start of the entry point itself we have an obstacle with us. The entry had a 2 foot drop and then a 45 degree descent on loose sand with a drop about 5- 6 feet on the right. Arka led the way followed by karthik and next in turn was Md.Ali. He went over the drop a bit slow and his vehicle sat on it skid plate. Now we had to tow him out as we could not push him through the descent. So Vinod found another way to come in front of Ali to pull him out. But he could not climb up near Ali because of the loose sand and eventually kept digging in. So now Sanjay tried to come down in a new path so that he could be close enough to pull Ali's Jeep. Lots of tries but the sand just made him slide in every attempt. Atlast the Venkat's CJ3B pulled Ali out and soon one by one the Vehicles took the drop by adding momentum when they reached the drop.

Arka, I will try to put my experience through pictorial way. The entry point where the Ali's black jeep rested on its belly i tried to approach it from other side thrice but was running short of length of the tow rope just by an inch.

This i tried in third low, but was slipping diagonal wheels front left and rear right. Then tried in reverse low. Reached just half way through and finally reverse high reached a little ahead but still far not as much as i reach when i approaced straight ahead! I was running 38 PSI. Reduced it later, as little did i realise i would require it right at the entrance of the river bed

Learning-
  • 3rd high best for charging a slope with best torque and speed. One can also try 1st high as the speed is slightly higher.
  • Avoid reverse low as the gearing is too low. Reverse high best to have a quick exit.
  • Always deflate tyres once you enter dry sandy river bed. Merely locking hubs and engaging 4wd is not enough.
P.s- Arka is simply inflating my brand equity. So guys like IPL, start bidding for me to have me in your team

Thats going to be expensive Sid, You will have to pay the complete team as i always have been an average performer individually. So consider a team buy out?

p.s- Guys, its time to make some money :-P

we are ok with a team buy out - but we would have to evaulate your cheer leading squad before we consider to buy the whole team.

With VN by your side, Cheerleaders automatically pass evaluation unless you are ARKA.

But Sid, we competitors also need MONEY.

Recce#1 Part 4

Hi Guys,

We guys did a steep climb (more than 100% gradient), it had a mild overhang on the top and I could feel the front suspension release at the time, that is the first indicator if a Back Flip, well since I'm not into gym-nasties, decided to go easy and give it a few more (7-8) attempts and then the gradient came down to 45 degrees.

Vinod, Vikram, Tini and Sanjay can add to it.

Regards,

Arka

PS - This was the climb Propeller had to reverse down.
