UM Motorcycles @ Auto Expo 2016

After showcasing their product range at the 2014 Auto Expo, UM Motorcycles has officially launched three models from its Renegade range of cruisers. The Renegade Sport S and Renegade Commando are available for online bookings, while the Renegade Classic will be available from June 2016.

Here are a few finer points about UM Motorcycles in India (website link):
  • The company is headquartered in New Delhi, with manufacturing being carried out at Lohia Auto's plant in Kashipur, Uttarakhand.
  • The Renegade series currently has localization level of around 70%. Expected to rise to 85-90% in the next 3-4 months.
  • The 1st dealership is expected to be opened this month in Gurgaon.
  • 30 dealers have already been appointed, while the number will go up to 50 in the next 3 months.
  • Deliveries of the Renegade Sport S and Commando begin in May, 2016.
  • Bookings of the Renegade Classic open in June 2016, with deliveries in July.
  • UM Motorcycles is targeting "hardcore enthusiasts" with the first 1,000 motorcycles. Interested buyers have to fill in personal details while booking their bike online. These profiles will be screened for backgrounds as the company wants these owners to be involved in the developmental process, to help them make any improvements in the product line.
  • On some level UM will be looking to provide the Harley-Davidson experience (Harley-Owners Group or HOG specifically) in order to get owners involved in the company's decisions and to create brand loyalty.

Here's the Renegade Sport S; priced at Rs. 1.49 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi):

Harley-Davidson V-Rod anyone?

280 mm disc brake at the front with a 2-piston caliper:

Side profile is actually quite well-proportioned:

18L fuel capacity definitely helps improve the tank range:
UM Motorcycles @ Auto Expo 2016-dsc05303.jpg

Ignition console on the tank. Better steer clear of metal keychains:
UM Motorcycles @ Auto Expo 2016-dsc05304-1.jpg

Liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, 279.5 cc engine makes over 24 BHP @ 8,500 rpm and 21.8 Nm of torque @ 7,000 rpm. Not the rev figures you'd expect on a cruiser:

DRLs on the sides:

I quite like the crash guard's integration:

Model badging on the side panels:

Drum brake at the rear:

Switchgear quality is ok. Fuel is fed through a carburetor and the choke lever is placed here:

Analogue speedometer with a mini-digital display for additional info:

USB port to charge your phone. Will need a phone dock to be useful of course:

Blind spot mirrors:

At least in this shade, the sporty nature of the high-revving engine is reflected in the paint job:

Note the side-facing reflectors on the number plate mount:

The Renegade Commando; priced at Rs. 1.59 lakh:

As the name suggests, this is a bike for the kind of person you'd find at the army excess store :

Headlamp console is inspired by the Harley Fat Boy by the looks of it:
UM Motorcycles @ Auto Expo 2016-dsc05337.jpg

Wire-wheels add a classic touch. 280 mm disc brake here too:
UM Motorcycles @ Auto Expo 2016-dsc05338-1.jpg

Front heavy design is well-balanced by a chunky rear portion:
UM Motorcycles @ Auto Expo 2016-dsc05338.jpg

18L fuel tank like the Sport S:
UM Motorcycles @ Auto Expo 2016-dsc05339.jpg

6-speed gearbox, engine with a 74 mm x 65 mm bore x stroke equation, and output figures are shared with the Sport S:
UM Motorcycles @ Auto Expo 2016-dsc05340.jpg

Hydraulic suspension with springs at the rear:

Aesthetically, the backrest doesn't blend well with the seat:
UM Motorcycles @ Auto Expo 2016-dsc05341.jpg

Finish quality isn't premium:

Split seats:

The Renegade Classic; priced at Rs. 1.69 lakh, but it isn't available just yet since it is still going through the final stages of development:

The Renegade range touches upon a variety of cruiser buyers:

The bike look nice and they have been promoting in the social networks, lets see how they perform.
One question, is this is an Indian company or overseas expanding in India?

Re: UM Motorcycles @ Auto Expo 2016

The bikes look really good !!

Great to see home grown manufacturers bringing in beautiful new styles based on the cruisers. Having been a biker for almost a decade, the machines do make me sit up and take notice.

Any reviews/hands-on experiences of any of the models shown above ??

Re: UM Motorcycles @ Auto Expo 2016

Don't get me wrong for the price the bike looks better than the bullet offerings.

Let's wait to see some ownership reviews but for the price the bikes seems to have more in offering than the bullets.

I am hyper critical always on how bad vfm the bullets are.

UM is an American company which has set up a manufacturing unit in partnership with Indian partner lohia. The arrangement is something similar to the one between BMW-TVS.

Re: UM Motorcycles @ Auto Expo 2016

Surely the product range from UM does make one turn heads and notice (and a big if Hillram has picked up one). Thanks to TeamBHP for covering this newbie so extensively.

Agreed that the bike may not be screwed together to perfection but if they give the experience of the mighty Harleys at may be 1/10th the expense with some exclusivity, then they have really done their home work well. Excited to watch this space in the near future.
