Volkswagen starts testing Polo-based compact sedan

Volkswagen is gearing up to jump into the compact sedan segment in India. The company has started testing a sub-4 metre sedan based on the Polo. The compact sedan will share its wheelbase with the hatchback.

While much of the car is hidden under the cladding, the spotter claims that it has a different grille and headlamps compared to the Polo and Vento. The centre console of the car is similar to its hatchback and sedan siblings.

Like other sub-4 metre sedans, the car will be powered by 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engines, carried over from the Polo. This will make the car eligible for excise duty benefits.
The Polo-based compact sedan will compete against the Honda Amaze, Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Hyundai Xcent, Tata Zest and the upcoming Ford Figo Aspire. While media speculation says that the car will be introduced in mid -2016, Volkswagen has not revealed any date on which it will launch the Polo-based compact sedan.
