Rumour: Volkswagen to bring Taigun compact SUV to Auto Expo

According to a report on Overdrive, German car manufacturer, Volkswagen is likely to show its compact SUV, the Taigun at the Auto Expo in February. The car was first shown at the Sao Paolo Motor Show, Brazil in October 2012.

Based on the Up! hatchback, the Taigun is 3.86 metres long, 1.73 metres wide and 1.58 metres tall. The sub 4-metre length means it is eligible for tax concessions in India.

The Taigun shown in Brazil was powered by a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder, turbocharged, petrol engine, good for 110 PS and 175 Nm of torque, coupled to a 6-speed manual transmission. While there is no official word on the car’s specifications for India, we do expect a diesel power plant to make its way under the Taigun’s hood. It is also being speculated that there will be a choice of manual and automatic transmissions available for the car.

When the Taigun comes to India, it will go head to head with the Ford EcoSport and other sub-four-meter SUVs from other manufacturers, like Maruti and Honda that are expected over the coming months.

VW plans to assemble the Tiguan in Brazil and India. The car is not expected to go on sale in India before 2016.
