Rumour: Nissan might bring Leaf EV to India on trial basis

Nissan is considering a launch of its Leaf electric vehicle in India by the end of this year. The Japanese manufacturer is planning to keep it a low volume initiative in order to gauge customer response.

The above information was shared by Colin MacDonald, CEO and managing director of Renault Nissan Automotive India. Colin also stated that the said plans are still under evaluation and a final decision is yet to be taken. The India-bound model will essentially be the new-generation Leaf, which is expected to be globally unveiled in September 2017.

Nissan's increased interest in the Leaf hatchback comes at a time when the Indian Government is trying to increase the number of electric cars in the country's overall vehicle sales. The central government has already set an ambitious target of selling only EVs in the country from the year 2030.

This has attracted interest from various automobile manufacturers as they plan to introduce new electric vehicles in the market in order to prepare for a huge upcoming demand. Mahindra, which is currently the only manufacturer selling electric cars in India, has already announced its expansion plans in the EV domain. Nissan too appears to be trying to grab a share of the pie.
