Nissan beats Maruti to become second largest car exporter

Nissan Motor India Private Limited has overtaken Maruti Suzuki India Limited to take second place in the largest passenger car exporters list of India. Nissan currently exports the Micra hatchback and the Sunny sedan, which it builds at the Renault-Nissan alliance facility at Oragadam, near Chennai to countries in Europe, Africa and Middle East.

In the first ten months of the current fiscal, Nissan has shipped 94,931 India-built cars compared to Maruti's 79,945. For the same period in the previous fiscal, Maruti shipped 95,526 cars, while Nissan had managed to export 80,867 units. The reason for the fall in Maruti's exports is attributed to Algeria having changed its homologation. Additionally, African countries having imposed non-tariff barriers by signing a preferential import duty agreement with European players.

Hyundai Motor India is sitting safely at top, having exported 2.04 lakh units for the same period.

While the domestic automobile market has seen the worst slump ever, passenger vehicle exports have risen by seven percent, with utility vehicles providing a boost. In the period April 2013- January 2014, 4,91,882 passenger vehicles were exported from India. Cars accounted for 4,60,711 of the total number.
