Karun Chandok launches KC500 charity cycling event

Indian racing driver Karun Chandok, has launched a charity cycling event in association with Madras Midtown Round Table 42. Dubbed “KC500 presented by Montra”, the ride will cover a distance of 500 km from Chennai to Kodaikanal, with stopovers at Pondicherry, Tanjore and Madurai.

The ride starts on the 19 January, 2014, which happens to be Karun’s birthday and ends on 22 January. It is supported by the Montra brand of TI Cycles, AVT Tea Group, Mahindra and Deepak Agencies.

The event aims to raise funds through sponsorships and online donations for :

  1. The Vishnu Devananda Charitable Trust, which is run by Karun’s family to educate children and
  2. Madras Midtown Roundtable 42 foundation, a charitable trust to support school and educational projects

For the main event, Karun plans to keep the number of riders down to 30, since it will be easier to manage the group and ensure the riders' safety.

Mahindra will be providing SUVs, which will be carrying food, drinks, spare parts, mechanics, medical supplies and physios to take care of the riders.

A breakup of the route is given below :

  • Day 1 : 140 km – Chennai to Pondicherry
  • Day 2 : 180 km – Pondicherry to Tanjore via Cuddalore, Chidambaram, Kumbakonam
  • Day 3 : 110 km – riding from Tanjore to Karaikudi, followed by a float in buses to Madurai for the overnight stop
  • Day 4 : 70 km with hills starting in Athoor and climbing to Kodaikanal via Pannaikadu

There will also be a mass ride for people at the start of the event.
