Earlier this week we had reported that Hyundai could launch the facelifted Verna in India in the first quarter of next year. Now a test mule of the car has been spotted near the company's plant in Chennai.
Hyundai has already launched the Verna facelift in Russia, where it is known as the Solaris. The car features updates to the exterior such as larger headlamps, a new twin-slat grille, redesigned front bumper with restyled fog lamps and daytime running lights at both ends, wider air dam placed lower in the bumper, the tail lamps with LEDs and a slightly tweaked rear bumper with restyled reflectors. The test mule seen in Chennai was wearing a lot of cladding at the front and rear and nothing on the sides, so we expect the changes seen on the Solaris to be carried over. The interior of the car is expected to continue unchanged.
Like the current car, the Verna facelift is expected to be available with a choice of two petrol engines - 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre. A 6-speed automatic transmission could be offered on the 1.6 in place of the 4-speed unit of the current car. The 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre diesel engine are also likely continue in the line-up with some performance upgrades.
The Verna was the best-selling C2 segment sedan in India. Its sales went southwards after Honda introduced the fourth-generation City. The recently launched Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is said to have clocked more than 13,000 bookings, making the Verna's task harder. With the upgrades, Hyundai will hope that the Verna manages to improve its sales performance.
A test mule of the the Elite i20-based crossover was also spotted near Hyundai's plant. This car will be Hyundai rival for the Volkswagen Cross Polo, Toyota Etios Cross and Fiat Avventura.
