I have seen several Willys CJ-3Bs in rural Madhya Pradesh with the spares mounted in the front this way.

Maybe the fan pulled cooling air through the radiator, from the slipstream below the front bumper. Quite likely the engine compartment admitted a lot of air. For one thing, the insulation on the CJ-3B was so absymally meagre that the roar of the F4/134 and the whines of the differentials, gearbox and transfer case could be heard inside the cabin.

Here is a 1944 WW2 Willys MB ready for mission-critical military duty, with the spare mounted exactly in the same way.

OT: Note the two piece wheel rims, full-floating rear hubs and the fold-down-and-stow bows for the canvas top.

I guess we are not meaning Tamil Nadu from 1979 onwards?
I would like to think the photo is 1940s/50s but maybe you or someone else can advise on that.
TAJ is not an pre partition series that is known.
In theory, it could have existed in Malaysia or Pakistan but both would probably be much later than the photo looks.
Assuming that this is indeed taken in India, I think that we will have to put it down to unknown!

Seriously that does look like Jackie Shroff and he looks like hes entering a Studio. The Willy's may be owned by some car supplier to films and it was common for actors to take a drive just before they used the car in the shot, to get accustomed to it. Jackie's love for cars is also not hidden from us.

Nice pictures, Kiran. I observed with curiosity, the one with the BMC headquarters - showing Select, Elegant, Minor, and Super Ten taxies.

That ghastly boxy building (central railway offices) in the background, completely spoils the period skyline. That means, this building too is quite old. A wonder how they managed to design it so badly, even way back then

Meanwhile, here's an old photo of Bandra Railway Station (or, is it Byculla ??) I came across. Nice vintage cars in the foreground..

Yes it is Marine drive. The shore you see is called Girgaum chowpatty. Loved the bus.

Ravi I think this is one of the Harbour line stations, either Currey road/ sandhurst road or one after that observe a crane on the left side of the picture.

Now the VT station box building was built sometime in the late to the early 70's, this photo with the superselects and elegants is definately from the mid to the late 70's as I have a lot of dated photos from that era which show these taxis.
