September 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: September 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks Aditya for the sales data:

More on the Sept-20 dispatch analysis:

At the backdrop of the upcoming festive season and anticipating the demand to be back, dealers stock up inventory and the result is a growth seen in most manufacturers and further contributed to an impressive growth of 31.4% in Sep’20 v/s Sep’19.
However only 3 manufacturer’s (Maruti,Tata and Kia) could improve their market share.

Highlights of Aug-20 dispatch figures:

- TATA Motors grew a phenomenal 142% YoY and the growth was one of the highest in the Industry! Tata Motors also recorded the highest Market Share growth in Sep’20 (it jumped from 3.9% in Sep’19 to 7.2% in Sep’20).

- Maruti Suzuki continues hold its dominance. The OEM registered a YoY increase of 33.9% and was also able to improve its market share by 0.9% in Sep’20.

- Even though Hyundai crossed 50k dispatches; its market share fell by -0.9%.

- Kia is on a high and sees a massive jump in Market Share by 3% in Aug’19 to 4.6% in Aug’20.

- Mahindra loses its No.3 spot again to Tata & Kia by a huge margin. The Indian OEM is rapidly losing its share and is now all dependent on the upcoming launch of Thar. But; can Thar help M&M get back volumes?

- MG registered de-growth for the first time since launch! MG is now readying for the launch of the Gloster and hopes to gain back numbers.

Top Manufactures for the Month:

Maruti Suzuki:

- Holds top 5 slots in the 10 best sellers for August and retains 7 positions in the top 10. The Top 10 Selling Cars of August 2020 contributed to over 49% cars sold in India for the month.

- Maruti’s Swift superseded Alto to become the bestselling car for both OEM and the Nation the second time since August 2020. It showed strong YoY & MoM growth and continues to signify how the first time car buyers are increasing during this pandemic.

- Baleno too outsold the Alto, recording a growth of 70%. Also note that rebadged Toyota Glanza sold 2,572 units – the combined Baleno+Glanza sales shall be 22,005 units!

- Alto slipped to second position and was just 1,187 units short of the second best selling Baleno in Sep’20. It had a solid 21% YoY jump though.

- S Cross shows good numbers in petrol avatar.

- Ciaz seems to be outdated in front of the New City & Verna, drops 11 % in growth.

- Majority of the erstwhile Maruti Diesel models sees de-growth in Sep’20 – Dzire (-11%), Brezza (-12%), Ciaz (-11%).

Hyundai:

-Hyundai posted its highest monthly sales for the past 23 months in Sep’20! Hyundai dispatched 50,313 units in September and registered a YoY & MoM growth of 24%, in spite of which it loses 0.9% of Market share.

-Creta was the best seller for Hyundai and contributed to almost 25% of Hyundai’s sales in September 2020! The model also emerged as India’s best selling SUV for the month. It was also the sole model from Hyundai to cross 12k sales in Sep’20.

-Its Compact SUV loses out, Venue ranked fourth for the OEM and around 8,469 units were dispatched in September 2020 and lags behind Maruti Suzuki’s Vitara Brezza.

TATA Motors:

- Tata Motors crossed 21k sales mark after 94 months in September 2020 ! The last time Tata Motors surpassed 21k sales was in October 2012 – It took Tata almost 8 years to achieve this feat.

- Since entry level/ hatchbacks are in demand it is no surprise that Tiago was the best selling Tata and 6,080 units were shipped in Sep 2020. It grew 98% Year on Year and 6% Month on Month.

- The New Nexon was able to cross the 6k mark by a whisker and 6,007 units were dispatched in September 2020

- Altroz records its best figures to date recorded an offtake of 5,952 units in September 2020.

KIA

-Kia Motors India recorded 147% YoY growth with 18,676 unit overall sales in September 2020. While Sonet sold 9,266 units; the elder sibling Seltos sold an impressive 9,079 units too.

-KIA is now the 4th largest OEM(in sales), with a Market share of 6.5%

The segment of the month:

Premium Hatchbacks

Size: 101.6 KB

-Sales increased a phenomenal 51% YoY while the Industry YoY growth was 31%.

-Baleno was India’s second best-selling car for September 2020 and was the segment leader in premium hatches. The model sales shot up 70% YoY and sold close to 20k units.

-Baleno + Glanza sees 22005 dispatches,

-Hyundai i20 still sells in good numbers even though the next gen i20 launch is on the cards. The ongoing discounts of ~ 75k seems to be in its favour.

-TATA Altroz sales have shot up quite significantly and it recorded its all-time highest volumes in September 2020

-VW Polo – the car launched in 2010 still doing wonders and becomes the best-seller in the group.

Fantastic month for manufacturers , festive season helping them a lot to came out from covid effect .

FADA data of October will give a better idea of this pushed inventory , specifically like Maruti pushing without diesel powertrain , MG suspiciously stopped sharing the wholesales after 1 year !

Toyota URBAN CRUISER where is it ? In an attempt to topple KIA SONET numbers in its launch month, Maruti put the UC numbers together with Brezza ?

Weird to see positive figures in top loser list !

Re: September 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Smashing month for the India automobile scene, to say the least. The overall dispatch numbers are more than pre-Covid days!! In fact, Sept was the best month for the industry in a year!! Looks like people are going all out in spending all that money saved up over the last 8 months, given the cut in travel, eating out, etc.

PS - KIA has really taken the market by storm, by clawing up to the 4th position in such a short span of time. Goes on to show what solid market research - and delivering on the same - can do. While personally I do not like their products but hats off to them on this accomplishment!

What stood out for me was only 133 dispatches of the Duster. Will Renault slash prices or update the interiors of the Duster at least now, considering the 2nd Gen won't be coming to India anytime soon?

Is the Jazz an instant flop? Less than 1000 after a fresh launch. That too before the new i20 takes the market by storm.
Speaking of the i20 - an ultra modern version coming in a month's time and still it manages to sell almost 10000. The power of brand!

The Duster is a tough sell, even with the new fast engine. The competition does cost more but also offers more in terms of features, contemporary tech and resale value. I'm not sure a price correction will help the Duster and I dont know how feasible an interior update is.

Even the Rapid is not moving much despite the hype over the Rider variants. But atleast for Skoda they have the next gen coming in next year. Whereas the next Duster in India is the 3rd gen rumoured for 2023.

The top losers chart is incorrect, as many, in the lower half,
have increased sales over last month. We are dealing with abnormal circumstances (financial parlance) & since these lie at bottom of sales variance these are included in "top" (rather bottom) of sales as losers. It's better we trim the chart to negative performers only.

Thanks

Re: September 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Seems Indian auto industry is back on track. One of the reasons of higher numbers may be people are preferring personal vehicle over public transport. I feel Mahindra should have done better. Hope new Thar will add good numbers for Mahindra in coming months. Great to see growth of Tata and kudos to Kia for amazing marketing of their products

Re: September 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Mods please note a discrepancy. Top 10 losers also have gainers in the list. Technically incorrect. We may only want to list those which have lost sales numbers month-on-month.

Re: September 2020 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Good to see the market recovering. Very encouraging numbers from Tata. Hope the Thar will help our other homegrown automaker move up.

A couple of things caught my attention:

- Fortuner vs Endeavour: The gap is widening, and the Fortuner's numbers are almost 50% more than the Endy. Their sales were in a similar ballpark few months ago. Where is that BiTurbo, Ford?

- VW sold more units of the T-Roc than the Vento: Surprising indeed!
