Great work guys. I just love it when a DIY can be done which so resoundingly answers the pricing policies of car makers in India.

One of the best DIY jobs ever done on forum.

PS: Are there any holes behind the number plates in Ikon? or is it just normal flat sheet metal?

On the Ikon, the fuel cap is a seperate mechanism which is coupled to the central locking system of the car. It can be opened only when the door locks are open. The boot release is seperate from this arrangement.

I remember Parwath mention that the lever we source should be a single lever type. So, should source one from possibly the Wagon R or the Sumo.

Prajesh, i dont remember since i havent removed the number plate, but i believe there arent any holes. Why?

Dont ask!! I tried out the second DIY (with the 6 LEDs and one resistor). All seemed to be go well until after sometime, there was smoke all over. The whole circuit burnt off. I still have not managed to find out what went wrong! May be my foundation was not correct.

As of now, dropped that plan and now back to my old setup.

BTW this is a brilliant DIY. I dont need to do this as i already have a Boot Release Setup in my ZXI. (lucky me!!) - No offence to you mate, just that looking at my previous experience on DIY, i might just goof it up

John, we didnt check out the SX4, but what kind of a setup does it have?

Looks like you confused the series and parallel arrangments.
Its supposed to be 6 LEDs, with two parallel arms, each having 3 LEDs with a resistor in series on each arm.

This is off-topic here, so we can take it up on the other thread.

Benbsb29 - great show - good ingenuity

I have always felt even the conventional location of boot release is quite inconvenient to reach and one mixes up with the fuel lid release

it would be good if you can extend this cable all the way to the front and bring it out via the dash board to the right bottom of steering ( where normally the mirror/head lamp adjust controls lay )

then you can place a nice vintage Amby headlight switch ( the pulling type ) or maybe a toggle switch which would give you that good feeling everytime you open the boot !

Yesterday at the reliance outlet I bought some plastic clips for guiding the running wires.
There is a small sticker behind them and a wedge to keep the wires in place.
Cost was about Rs 30 for a pack containing 24.
Offer buy one get one free.

Each clip is about 1*1 cm in size.
Some thing like this one.


Let me know if you want.
I can pick it up and courier it over if you don't find them there.

great work there benny and condor. It suddenly struck me that old jeeps used to have those "pull to stop the engine" mechanisms with lever or knob on dash. Probably you could it install something like that till you find a fitting lever. I guess it would be a very cheap solution temporarily.
