That is a truly excellent scene. Must admit, can't remember seeing anything like this before.

One of the first VW Beetle's at the Wolfsburg factory in 1937.This is a convertible and a smiling Fuehrer Adolf Hitler is taking a backseat on the car which was his dream project that had fructified.Perhaps he may be thinking that the Mercedes 540K's that he used were comparatively so spacious and gorgeous!!

The cars appear to be Fiat 600, Ponton Taxi, Isetta, Ford Taunus, Beetle, Opel Record, Taunus, older Taunus, DKW Schnellaster, Beatles, Ford, there is a Renault Dauphine in the back ground.

Cheers harit

this was common practice in wartime Europe, the brooms swept broken glass and other shrapnel away from the tyres thus preventing punctures. tyres were rationed during the war,and had to be looked after.
this appears to be france, the ford is most likely french built, as its left hand drive and has marchal fender lamps, and the number plate appears french

I am not sure about the car, first I thought Fiat, now not so sure.

I concur it a Studebaker. They had these distinctive and stylish fender mounted side lamps (sort of like the front of the Nautilus) which are to be seen here.

Correction, everything matches a Ford. A Studebaker of this era would have had the ovular headlamps. The only discrepancy are the fender side lamps.

we are talking about two different cars, the car with the brooms on the bumpers is a ford, the studebaker is in a photo posted by harit bhai earlier.

Re: Old pictures of Vintage and Classic Cars beyond our borders

Hi,

I am not sure if this is the right thread to post in, if not, please move to appropriate thread or delete.

This picture was taken by my aunt in the late 80's in New York, where there was some kind of an Indian parade.

regards,

Srinand.
